简介

"Camille Thurman is as artistically gifted as she is technically proficient. A coming yet quiet storm in the world of improvisational music". Brent Black / www.criticaljazz.com Origins...Originality. Camille Thurman is one of a handful of new artists that can have one foot firmly planted in her musical roots while charting a new course that is the perfect hybrid of straight ahead and contemporary flavors. In short, Camille Thurman embodies everything about the old school becoming new cool vibe that may be the saving grace for the music we have come to refer to as jazz. A prolific instrumentalist covering tenor and soprano saxophones as well as flute and a captivating vocal style that no one is else comes close to approaching. In short, Camille Thurman is a true original. Her first full fledged release, Origins is a collection of originals with the exception of a Fats Waller and Chaplin and Cahn tune. The covers are eclectic and well chosen, the originals are diverse and showcase a well rounded cultural influence that has the potential for massive appeal across a myriad of tastes. The lineup here includes drummer Rudy Royston as well as pianists Luis Perdomo and Enoch Smith Jr. not to leave out the organic vibe laid down by harpist Brandee Younger. Artists of similar lyrical DNA tend to toss out somewhat predictable releases and should leave their attempt at vocal work for those who are simply better trained. Camille Thurman is the real deal and part of a vibrant trio of releases on the way from Hot Tone Music. Improvisational music owes Thurman a debt of gratitude to have the skill sets necessary to push the lyrical envelope in a new and contemporary fashion while remaining true to her artistic integrity. A big tone poised to propel a big future, Camille Thurman is the real deal. -Brent Black Origins from Camille's Perspective:  When one thinks of the word ORIGIN, they may perceive it as a point of location in moving time. Some may believe it as a culminating point of things from prior existence meeting with things to come in the future. The inspiration of this album is based off of a principle I learned while studying as a Geological Science major. I've come to learn and believe that the principles of nature are in fact reflections of principles in life. How or who we are affects how we interact with others; which makes the present and shapes the future or sometimes reflects the past. Origins is a reflection of memories, events and things, through song that have brought me here to this point in time (the now) and is also a documentation of me as an emerging artist in the jazz world towards the future. This album is where those two directions meet...the present "now". I hope that you the listener can see, feel and hear this documentation through this album, be inspired and come along with me in this journey and be apart of it moving forward into the future. "Revisiting the past, makes us into who we are today- which gives us the hope in pressing on into the future and continuing the journey" -Camille   Forward Motion A teacher once gave me great advice from the words of the late tenor saxophonist Lester Young, "Forward Motion". In other words, you have to take everything you approach with a forward, moving momentum to the farthest direction of understanding possible. Thank you Bruce. A Change of Mind This is the story of how I decided to become a musician after studying to become a Geological and Environmental scientist. The decision to go against the expectations of family, taking a risk in life to follow one's heat and taking a chance in believing in one's self. Indigo Moments Precious childhood memories of laying under the indigo night sky & being whisked away to dreamland while being told bedtime stories of Faith Ringgold's "Tar Beach", ancient African kingdoms, fairytales and stories of struggle, triumph and courage. This is a lullaby in tribute to those memories Origins This is a reflection of life, nature and humanity. Everyone has a start or origin. The process of "beginning" has events that leads up to its start and also affects who we are today. we build on our Origin (foundation) into the future. This composition reflects the journey, experiences and struggles of finding one's self; uncertainty, bumpiness, preservering, being on the edge, falling into the unknown, moments of finding the grove and moments of clarity or realization. This music takes you on a ride of life. The Dreamweaverer: It takes people coming together to make the dream of one person come to life. This is dedicated to the people who came together and make dreams become reality and happen . They make this happen by weaving the dreams one stitch at a time through their love, support and sacrifices (my mentors, family, friends). They helped me get to the place that I am now, in making a mark as an artist but also were the beginning before that "origin" or mark. The Harp is used to be the dreamy feeling and the plucking of the strings are the dreams being woven together. Anna's Joy: (Interlude- Free vocal): Ana Marquez Green was a beautiful talented little girl who was full of joy and life. This piece is dedicated in memory of all of those beautiful qualities that made her who she was and will always be. This song represents her spirit and is a reflection of the joy, innocence and light she shared with everyone. In Duetime This is a homage to bop (harmony), Brazilian rhythms and their kings & queens (Rosa Pasos, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Elis Regina, Sergio Mendes) and vocalese (Ella Fitzgerald & Sarah Vaughan). In duetime is based off of the belief that things come together with patience and persistence at the right place and time when you are ready to receive them, in duetime; never too late nor too early. Kindred Minds: This is dedicated to friends that share a special relationship or like-mindedness bond and respect for each other; The admiration of enjoying the company "as is". Felix's Groove: (Interlude) Felix is a little brother of a student. He is a gymnast and would alway show his tumbles and somersaults that he would learn. This is in tribute to the fun, happy, playful & adventurous spirit of a child; a time or place in life of being carefree. Jitterbug Waltz Fats Waller was a native of Queens, NY (my home town or "origin"). This tune was a Fat's Waller composition, revisited and re-arranged by placing a modern twist of rhythms and grooves. It pays tribute to the past tradition and brings it into "the today", with great feels and harmonies and goes forth into the future as a part of my heritage and origin. Pursuit With a Purpose: This is a story of the underdog and how his courage, determination, heart, will, persistence, dedication and journey lead him to hope. One's dedication to achieve one's purpose and to continue pressing on through the journey with the above qualities builds character. These same qualities are what is required to make a dream a reality. This song is a reflection of that journey. Please Be Kind Growing up studying and listening to Sarah Vaughan as a child, singing into the mirror with a hair brush in my bedroom, I found myself falling in love with this song and her ability to transcend lyrics into feelings and touch people's heart and emotions (even 30 years later). Sarah was the first vocal teacher I ever had. This song is dedicated to her. Revisiting the Past (Interlude) This is based on the geological principle of the past being around us in the present, giving us insight to the future. We cannot move forward into the future without studying or knowing the past. We have to revisit the past in order to gain insight and know our place of origin (starting point). This is a homage to my roots; jazz (Dexter Gordon, Sarah Vaughan, Lester Young, George Coleman), old school hip-hop (De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Arrested Development, Q-Tip) and 90's R&B group (En Vouge, Take 6). This pieces ties all of those music beginnings together.
