Market forces demanded a Hanukkah Blues. When public radio DJ, Ellen Bloom, complained that she had lots of Christmas blues to play, but no Hanukkuh blues whatsoever, the Demonstrators sprang in to action. Our consultant for Jewish culture, Roni Zwerling, came up with the concept, Ellen Griffith wrote the words and music, and the result was an odd blues ditty in waltz time (!). Nobody would touch it! Finally Tom Magnus (of the Cropcircles) bravely made the first voice and guitar recording and put a proper 4-4 beat to the thing. Ellen Bloom aired it on KPCC's Friday Night Blues Revue during Hanukkah, 1996. By then the song had a life of its own, and it demanded higher fidelity, so we toted a Tascam 4-track into Roy Zimmerman's tiny studio upstairs over McCabe's Guitar Shop, and we said, "Go, Roy!" That version aired three years in a row, increasing our fan base to maybe 40 or 50 people. Finally Marty Rifkin ran it through his ProTools 500 in a REAL recording studio, and added bass. So... The voice, rhythm guitar, and all those fancy guitar fill-ins are Roy, and the bass is Marty. A word of warning to the listener: Don't be complaining to us that the song misses the spiritual essence of the holidays. We calls 'em as we sees 'em.
