Casino Shanghai Casino Shanghai a techno-pop band that was formed in the 80's when Ulalume vocals, Carlos Robledo synthesizers and Walter Schmidt bass & synthesizers began to work on a set of songs for a farewell concert for Ulalume at club 9. The first band to ever play there as live act that turned the place into a venue. Later Humberto Alvarez joined the band on keyboards. All members had worked on different notorious bands in the local scene, as well as other projects in New York, Israel, Japan and the UK. Ulalume was the lead singer for The Casuals a new wave band and Denseundergrowth an NY art trio that consisted of vocals, violin and guitar that played at CBGBs, The Ritz, Pyramid Club amongst others. Carlos and Walter had been playing together for many years with Decibel an experimental band and then with Size a glampunk band. Humberto had been playing with MCC. Casino Shanghai was signed to record their first album "Film" for the Comrock/ WEA label that was released in December of 1985. The group made various controversial appearances on TV when an band without a drummer or guitarist was very unusual. The music of Casino Shanghai was used for the soundtrack of "Cronicas de Familia" directed by Diego Lopez that was nominated for the Ariel award for best original soundtrack in1986. The band had a guest appearance in the movie " Juana La Cantinera" directed by José Loza. Their last live shows were in a festival in Monterrey and another in Ciudad del Carmen. They later got together to record "LeTombeau de Edgar Poe" using a poem by the french writer Stephane Mallarmé that can be heard on the compilation "Backup" under the label Noise Control in 2005. Ulalume moved to NY in the 90's and was been involved in various multimedia art projects and as a Dj, Charly worked on a solo project called Sexcentrik Pool and Walter released an album called "Rios De Sangre" in 2006. Casino Shanghai is preparing the release for the first time on CD of their now classic debut album "Film", digitally re-mastered in L.A. that includes "Le Tombeau d' Edgar Poe" and "Cuerpos Huecos" as bonus tracks.
