Immersed in local traditional sean-nós songs initially, he has combined that poignant and noble tradition with that of the English ballad in Ireland and American Country and Western to create a fresh, unique and beautiful genre of singing which can only be called John Beag's. He sings of poverty, homesickness and emigration.
