简介
Miroslav Tadic was chosen by Guitar Player Magazine as "one of the world's 30 most radical and individual guitarists" for their 30th anniversary issue. His approach to his instruments is a deeply personal synthesis of techniques and styles, drawing on classic rock and traditional blues, the classical repertoire, flamenco, and experimental/avant garde. He is especially well-known for his recordings and concert performances of Eastern European folk music, especially that of Macedonia, and is noted for his pioneering work in applying the elements of classical and flamenco techniques to the electric guitar. He performs worldwide and is strongly represented on recordings, particularly on the M.A. Recordings and CMP labels. He often collaborates in group projects with drummer/world percussionist Mark Nauseef, and in duo with Macedonian guitar virtuoso Vlatko Stefanovski. Composer/multi-instrumentalist Arthur Jarvinen is best known for his long association with the acclaimed contemporary music ensemble the California E.A.R. Unit, with whom he performed as percussionist and conductor on major concerts, festivals, broadcasts, and recordings worldwide. In recent years he has devoted himself primarily to composing, especially in more vernacular idioms, and performing mostly on electric bass and voice, and improvising with unique electronic instruments. Jarvinen's relationship to surf music is one of life-long love and enthusiasm for the genre in all its manifestations - but especially the classic, guitar-driven instrumentals. This album explores the moodier, introspective side of surf music, effectively capturing the vibe of pieces like the Sandals' theme for the beautiful film Endless Summer, but with the sensibility of a contemporary musician steeped in post-minimalism. The music is spare and transparent, decidedly economical, yet rich, vibrant, and rhythmically compelling. The pieces take their time, like swells coming into shore - one after another, after another, after...each one much the same, but each repetition of the shape unique and fresh in its own way. The exquisite interpretations of the unique surf ballads on this disc feature Miroslav Tadic on a variety of guitars including nylon string, steel string, electric, electric baritone, and Rickenbacker 12 string, with Arthur Jarvinen on electric bass, Hammond Solovox (a 1947 synthesizer), and (wordless) vocal harmonies.
