简介

Drawing on a wide range of bluegrass and old-time material Redgrass embodies the high lonesome sound made popular by the old brother duets. This trio's predilection for fast tempos, bluesy harmonies and riotous stage antics have given them their reputation as an act to hear live. Their quirky and original tunes come to life with Kris's honey-coloured rumble, Steve's fiery pickin', and Sean’s relentless drive. In September 2007 they released “On That Good Road” a debut album of original material based in the old-time and bluegrass traditions. This record was nominated for best release of 2007 by Georgia Straight’s Tony Montague. They continue to perform at various venues in their hometown and their involvement as musicians in Vancouver’s acoustic music community is indispensable. Kris Boyd’s musical journey started at the Winnipeg Folk Fest at the age of four, where he declared “I want to play the banjo!”. For some twenty odd years after, he found himself pulled in many directions, playing guitar and bass in punk, blues, reggae and folk bands. After a move to Vancouver ten years ago, he started a successful business as a sound engineer whose clients now include Randy Bachman and Vancouver New Music. When a rain-soaked mandolin found its way into his home it quickly rekindled his childhood love of bluegrass music. Since that time Kris has devoted himself to the mandolin and is currently pursuing a diploma in jazz performance at Vancouver Community College, studying with Jesse Zubot. Steven Charles, a Vancouver local, graduated with a degree in Jazz Guitar in 1999. As a performer, he specializes in Brazilian music; composing and playing Cavaquinho for local group Corcovado and re-inventing the Choro tradition with Sapeca. Since encountering Bluegrass and Old-time music in 2005, Steve has quickly established himself in the scene. He is a proud member of Viper Central, holding down the grooves playing acoustic bass, emerging only to sing and share his love affair with the clawhammer banjo. As a multi-instrumentalist he performs with many local theatre companies. In his arsenal are nylon and steel string guitar, electric and upright bass, piano, banjo, mandolin, cavaquinho and various percussion instruments. He is active in Vancouver’s diverse music scene, often seen with Ache Brasil, Mark Berube, The Fugitives and Fourth Street Django. In the spring of 2007 he produced a compilation CD of the emerging bluegrass and old-time bands in Vancouver, entitled “Whiskey Hollow Bound”. Sean Cronin is a bassist who lives in Vancouver, whose varying interests and intuitive musicianship have found him playing with many of the city's best musicians. Originally from Invermere, B.C., he began playing bass at twelve. Throughout high school, his influences came to be uncommonly diverse, from punk rock to jazz and funk to the finger-pickin’ country of his father, John Cronin. Since moving to Vancouver, he has played in the bands of Mike Allen, Amanda Tossof, Denzal Sinclaire, Bruno Hubert, Ben Rogers, The Breakmen, and now, Redgrass. His lack of red hair does not detract from his ability to play the doghouse with the soul of a redheaded stepchild. www.redgrass.ca www.myspace.com/redgrassbluegrass www.whiskeyhollowbound.com
