Beer. Sex. Drugs. Heartache. Yup, all these things seem to define a "rock & roll" band, and these boys are no strangers to the trappings of rock love, but what really makes them tick, and what's behind a name? ~ Your first album will be called MAYDAY!. What's the story behind the name? ~ "Well, literally "MAYDAY!" is a distress call, used by pilots as a last desperate cry for help in a dire situation...and that's exactly what I'm hearing from all over the world right now. Just a big huge scream for help from every direction.... It seems that every day there's a new catastrophe somewhere, and we're all starting to fight more and more. The world population is increasing, while our resources which we ALL share are dwindling. There's indifference everywhere you look, people just using and using, but not giving back... We're in trouble here, and I can't help but feel that we won't understand or care until it's too late... MAYDAY! also sums up many situations that we've been involved in somehow, in that many songs on this album deal with heavy relationship trouble, love lost, and constant curiosity about the future... The album makes you FEEL, and not just dance...although at times that's all you want to do. It bursts into sharp fits of rage in an instant, and it's full of these longing melodies asking impossible questions to those unknown.... ah, you know..we're just saying what IS." The music of MAYDAY! is rich with gut-wrenching choruses, lightning strike guitar leads, and thundering drums, countered at times with silky dream states, tasteful balladry, and a singe of country boogie. Influenced by late greats such as Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, and the Who, as well as more contemporary artists like The Black Crowes, U2, and Soundgarden, Shades of Day somehow finds it's own place in this huge music world with their impending debut release... The Band was born in a garage in Santa Barbara, CA just at the turn of the millenium, and soon enough they dove into the local music scene for acceptance and began learning "the ropes". In 2002, the band started on the mother of all projects. They needed a place to be creative, to rehearse, to hang out, and to record their music. It promised to be a hell of a task, but work began in October of 2002. The palette was a hundred year old barn in Ojai, CA full to the tin with rusty sharp farm equipment, dirt, boulders, wildlife, bikes, and amazon spiders. Work continued for two years on and off as funding and time would permit, and in October of 2004, after a truckload of hard work and some brutal heartache, came the opening of "The Red Barn Recording Studio". During the six years the band has been together, they've played hundreds of shows in Santa Barbara, Ventura, and Los Angeles including The Viper Room, The Dragonfly, Club Lingerie, The Ventura Theatre, The Wildcat Lounge, and Velvet Jones, opening for major acts such as Blondie, Edwin McCain, and Little Feat. They have become one of the most popular acts in the county, based on incredible word of mouth, some great articles in the local "weeklies" and a searing live show that leaves everyone present sweaty, screaming, and begging for one more. The band is currently touring southern California and is looking forward to taking their unique style into Nevada, Arizona, Oregon and Washington this year to promote their hard earned debut album.
