IMPENDING REVELATION is the fourth full length album from Western Australian destroyers THE FUROR, battling forth since 2002. This album is a solo effort, like 2012's Sermon of Slaughter release. It is entirely composed and performed by the band's founder DIZAZTER. Cover art by James Campbell: www.mhorgl.com Additional Furoric devastation: www.facebook.com/thefurorobliterate In a situation where you've got one guy suddenly in charge of every instrumental and compositional element of a project, particularly if that entity existed before as a full band, there might be the risk of over-indulgence and a lack of editing. With Impiety and Malignant Monster drummer Dizazter now handling not only drums and vocals but bass, lead and rhythm guitars as well, Australian technical black metal force The Furor has avoided every potential pitfall and ended up with probably the best album by the band yet. If anything Dizazter has tightened up his songwriting in every way and paid heed to some of his innate influences as shown by the cover of Slayer's 'Show No Mercy', resulting in an album that's more brutal, more hard-hitting and more downright memorable than anything The Furor have put out so far. Impending Revelation is a record I've been seriously looking forward to hearing, not just for its fantastic cover art by Mhorgl's James Campbell that recalls some classy early '90s extreme metal styles of painting. The fourth album of brutal and technical black metal from the band combines the rabid pace and ferocity of the epic and punishing War Upon Worship with brevity and forcefulness for a record that recalls Necrophobic and Nifelheim as much as it does Impiety and Absu, all with a barbaric production and attitude that will ensure its suitability for lovers of old skull thrash and bestial black metal. Hell's Headbangers wish they had signed this band. The compositions have gained a fluidity above and beyond what was present on War Upon Worship and Advance Australia Warfare, so that in addition to the demonic assault of riff upon riff, with highly technical drum fills all the while, there is a strong sense of unity and escalation. The tracks are far shorter as well, which helps provide an extra kick in the face from this tight, even brusque material. It really f**king thrashes in some parts, such as the demonic opening of 'Corpse Eclipse', and I feel like some of these riffs could have ended up on a second album by another Dizazter band, Shrapnel had it manifested by now. As it is those evil bludgeoning beats have kicked the guy's solo project onto another level of ferocity. Highlights abound. 'Inferno Fortification' really presents something new for The Furor - wailing leads that give it a bit more of a melodic black metal aspect, like something Dark Fortress might come up with were their music even more scabrous and abrasive. I really enjoy the moaning Swedish style motifs of 'Corpse Eclipse'. 'Black Sorcerer Of Sadism' is probably the most black metal of all the offerings here - straight-up, full-speed blasting chaos that would make Watain shit their pants. 'The Pentagram Prevails' is a heaving, filthy closer comprising an impressive finale with a desolate, monolithic feel. The mix of this record is such that Dizazter's phlegmatic rasps are occasionally a little buried by the constant and total punishment of the drums. It doesn't harm the overall effect however. With a decent audio setup, and enough exposure to the album, the instrumentation and vocals start to parse out from one another. There is so much going on with the kit and the guitars are fairly complex as well, but fortunately the production, though raw, is spacious and heavy. Yet again I have to find words for one of the most insane drummers on the planet. Whether it is lethal d-beat thrash drumming, those "backwards" blast beats that brutal death metal bands do, scattering militaristic tattoos or full-on Marduk-style black metal blasting, Dizazter remains one of the most arresting and solid drummers to be found anywhere in the extreme metal underground. Drummers will love this album to death. The record is a stunning affirmation of what a one-man group can be when one particular thing is in place - when that one man is a highly talented drummer, rather than a guitarist who can just about play a keyboard as well. If you're into cold and misty forests rendered in monochrome by a wolf's moon, look away - this is the black metal of charred ground, barren soil blasted by hellish weaponry, human bones bleached by a pitiless sun and landscapes emptied of life. http://baileysmmcreamy.blogspot.sg
