简介

'Maltby Frolics' – with the constant rhythmic drive and thoughtful improvisation that is always evident in his big band arrangements. There is a crisp, carefree approach to these selections as interpreted by the orchestra and chorus, be it the florid, flaring rhythms of a spicy samba or the mellow mood of a sentimental ballad. So come on in and join the fun with an album of happy-time tunes of the highest order as 'Maltby Frolics'. Music by Maltby starts off on a torrid beat as the orchestra illustrates the frenzy of activity in Rio during carnival time, using the exuberant beat of a Samba Caliente or 'hot samba.' The mood then changes to blues – but blues with an optimistic outlook – as the reeds stand out in the colorful instrumentation that tells of young love and that infinite word – Forever. Next, Orchestra and Chorus join hands in a free-wheeling sample of the croon and spoon variety. It’s mellow three-quarter time music as soft and fragrant as the breeze of a summer night and as lovely as the light cast by an August Moon. A joyful jump beat follows as brass and rhythm get the green light in a symphonic jazz version of the bubbling and bouncing Whose Girl Are You? 'Maltby Frolics' continues with a melodic introduction to a new meeting place. It's a locale that just jingles with pots of gold, as the Orchestra and Chorus, in a sweeping, soaring ballad, confirm that We'll Meet At The End Of The Rainbow. The capers crop up again on the flip side as the orchestra blares forth with trumpets, trombones and saxes blazing in the rib-tickling opener, Boom-Dee-Ay-Boogie. For music more in the trip-the light-fantastic vein, the orchestra comes back with You're The Only One For Me, a romantic fox trot that uses a strings-oboe duet in its insinuating moments. Frolic, which follows, is a light-hearted and animated novelty that seems to embody the "eat, drink and be merry" mood which permeates the album. The strings play a leading role in the brisk, jovial measures which display the wealth of Richard Maltby’s arranging imagination. Summer Serenade, up next, brings extra zest and flavor to the sweet and shimmering Victor Herbert score through the streamlined harmonies by Orchestra and Chorus. The album concludes with a whirling, swirling presentation of the peppery tarantella, Spider Dance.
