简介

Vocal music was at the very core of my existence before I was born. My mother was a noted lyric soprano in the area of Boston, MA, where the Horton siblings originated (I'm a twin). My mom, Helen Taylor Horton, and my dad, Lloyd Trevor Horton, Sr., met one another when they were singing in a community chorus in the Lenox Street Housing Project in Boston's South End. So my very being was serenaded in utero! Fast forward to today: I am gloriously happy that this choral score I wrote in honor of the greatly gifted singer, songwriter and musical artist, Kate Wolf, is now reaching toward the heavens, and in some mysterious way, is tapping into the artistic presence Kate maintains in the great American tradition of folk music and story-telling. Her story, as a blessing in my musical life, is seen in the album booklet - which brings me back to my own story. Of course, I remember my mom singing as a part of my earliest memory. She had a gorgeous voice. I started studying music seriously after I received a calling that led me to be personally chosen by the great American composer and band leader, Duke Ellington. That story is outlined on my website, so I don't think it is necessary to share it here, other than to say that I was led to my place in American musical culture as the country's leading interpreter of Maestro Ellington's Sacred Music. That music is mostly sung! (Please visit the Randall Keith Horton website to read that story and see related videos, letters, etc.) Decades of church music and some synagogue music leadership have been the musical thread of my work with vocal music. Even in pop music, my work with Michael Jackson (when he was still with his brothers, in The Jackson Five), Marvin Gaye, Martha Reeves, and others in the pop music field, was work related to singing! I must mention my own "doo wop" singing in Boston in the 1950s. I was with the best! We sang like angels, and aspired to stardom and fame. Glad that didn't work! So here we are. I very much doubt that I will ever have another life experience like the one that inspired this music. The album booklet shows our creative team - from east coast and west. Hopefully, we will share this story on my television series, American Music, which broadcasts on PBS member station, KRCB, in northern California and elsewhere. This has been a labor of love. It is managed through a not-for-profit 501 (c) (3) educational corporation, so your purchase will help to support education in the field of music, primarily through the TV series. Thanks for your interest! Randall Keith Horton
