简介
This is an album whose authenticity and directness of expression is matched only by its underlying artistic complexity and conceptual nuances. Kosi Gyebi Sorensen (Akosua Gyebi) is a New York-based singer and composer whose vocal persona on this album is that of a young woman of humble origins struggling with the trials of intimacy and love, the apotheosis of Maya Angelou's I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. The Facebook pages of the singer herself, however, reveal a sophisticated, intellectually gifted African American woman who thinks deeply about such literature as Milton's Paradise Lost and Dante's Divine Comedy. Since she composed most of the songs on the album and gathered around her some very gifted musicians, what comes out is an extraordinarily well-crafted and beautifully articulated folio of songs deeply formed by a source within herself. They embody elements of many genres but are all based in the blues and mainstream jazz. -- Victor L Schermer for All About Jazz ================ You can hear Kosi’s influences in her music — from Simone to Porter, Evans to Albinez — but Kosi is her own woman. What struck me on this listen was how much she has matured in just over a year. Her first album was good; this is excellent. Her music is authentic, from the heart, and her voice is blissful to listen to. She is fulfilling the early promise she showed. She has the range and tone of an angel yet the throatiness and devilment of a banshee. Her trump card has been surrounding herself with musicians who understand and tune in to her messages. They support her vocal talent, weaving in and out where needed, fading and coming back in just where needed and also producing, at times, their own special solos. This is an album of beauty. -- Sammy Stein for Something Else! reviews ====================== Can a person be bold and polite? Can their music supersede what traditional blues emanate, and go deeper, with universal appeal. Yeah...Kosi can. This wonderfully unique young woman, is for 'my2cents' the best new indie artist I have heard in my four years of supporting artists with my blog. -- Pete Carma for StreetCredMusic
