简介
Paradise Lost is a concept album with a Phillip K. Dick-style dystopian story running through it. Set in Cyprus (the Eastern Mediterranean island with a tumultuous history and United Nations buffer zone cutting through its capital city) in the post-apocalyptic future, we're introduced to a settlement of survivors. The settlers' bleak lives are only counterbalanced by brain-altering machines called SimTapes which ply them with artificial emotions and experiences. One of the survivors stumbles upon a new form of SimTape and sets out to trace its origins. He (and we) plunge further down the rabbit-hole as he struggles to separate reality from simulation. The story begs the question: What if you could re-live your own childhood or your memories through a simulated experience once again, would you chose it over reality? Musically, the album is multifaceted but unostentatious, stripped down of over-complicated clutter it still emanates sophistication. From the first track onwards we're plugged into a synthesized soundscape oscillating from dark, rugged rhythmic instrumentals to more standard-form songs, to synaesthesia-inducing interludes, bursting with colour. Interspersed with manipulated samples from old-timey documentaries on Cyprus, the line between reality and fantasy blurs on a more meta-level.
