Open My Lips is based on Psalm 95, which is also an invitation to morning prayer in the Liturgy of the Hours. The Liturgy of the Hours is a set of prayers concentrated around scripture that marks every hour of the day. As a missionary for Catholic Mission Trips, Inc, I prayed it every morning, evening, and night. I loved this method of prayer because it was the only consistency that us missionaries had in our hectic schedules and everchanging responsibilities. After working as a missionary, I had a hard time transitioning into working as a music therapist. I soon realized that it was hard partially because I wasn't praying as much as I used to. My rhythm from the Liturgy was gone. I was relying on myself more than God. The irony of prayer, in both word and deed, is that we can only pray because God gives us the ability to do so. It is He who opens our lips, our ears, our eyes, and our hearts. Sometimes it just takes us awhile to wake up and realize that He is present and moving within us. The slow start to Open My Lips is symbolic of that idea of waking up in the morning. With the help of Fr. Chris Ortega, this prayer became the song it is today. May it be an invitation for all of us to let God open our lives more fully to Him.
