Something has happened that is causing them to reflect on their past choices. They struggle through the process of forgiveness. Their pride gets in the way, but they know they need to do it. Because they realize they have fallen so far, they feel very uncomfortable with themselves, especially to feel that the Lord might want to help them after all they've done. Though they are in this state, they stay determined and work, and realize that all they had to do to feel the love of the Lord is to forgive themselves, since the Lord loves them unconditionally.
