Born and raised in Chicago, Darlene began soloing in church at the age of three. She studied classical piano and voice, collecting numerous awards throughout her school years. By the age of 19, Darlene was performing solo with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Chorus and with the Lyric Opera Guild of Chicago. She received a Bachelor of Music Education degree at the age of 20 and completed her Master of Music degree, graduating magna cum laude in Voice from Chicago Conservatory College in a single year while teaching full-time in the Chicago area public school system. Motivated by her strong desire to write and perform, Darlene moved to Los Angeles.
