简介

Following my muse led me to gradually create another hip-hop/rap club banger track. This is my first Bandcamp-released collaboration with DejaVu since 2014’s “Live Forever (feat. DejaVu)” off of my 2013 album Distillery. The beginning of the creation of the elements that would become this song took place sometime in the Fall of 2015 when I was back working at Stop and Shop in Falmouth, MA after my first stab at living in LA, when I had a random moment of rap inspiration with a random name (Debra) in it for some reason. The store was open until midnight, and I used to work until close a fair amount, and these were largely extended periods of me standing at the register as the store grew more and more empty. So upon getting this random bit of inspiration, I pressed the feed button on the receipt printer and got a small piece and jotted down the lyrics to that part. The idea of rhyming “all the way in” with “Holiday Inn” was another idea that came to me at some point around that time. The chorus’ rapped and sung parts both came to me during this time as well, and they are pretty ridiculous and a little tongue-in-cheek. "Passing the bar" refers to the very difficult bar exams that lawyers have to take before they can practice, which is kind of funny since I talk about it here like it's such an easy thing to do, sneering that people "couldn't even pass the bar". Always following my muse happened to result in this being probably one of the most explicit and/or aggressive hip-hop/rap tracks I’ve made so far in my career, so please be advised that this content is not suitable for children in any way, shape or form. I was thinking of possibly doing a rapgenius.com lyrical breakdown of the various references DejaVu and I make during the course of the song. The second verse starts with one line in Spanish which I just felt like putting in there because I thought it was funny. At the time I thought "pendejas" meant "*****es" but according to Google Translate it means "idiots". The idea of rhyming “Anaphylaxis” with “Danica Patrick” (even if it wouldn’t necessarily be in a context that made sense) came to me in I think the first couple months of 2016, and I pretty much instantly knew I would use it in a song. Some of the lyrics in my first and second verse were ones I had envisioned as being to a faster more like roughly 128 BPM/64 BPM trap double-time beat with a flow reminiscent of some of Shawnna’s verses on her phenomenal 2012 mixtape entitled She’s Alive, but then I put them to this instrumental and they sound totally different since they’re fitting in a completely different rhythmic pocket. My second verse, while partially being a general braggadocio type of verse, also contains a not-so-subtle roast directly inspired by genuine gloves-off anger I was feeling in relation to something I was going through with someone at the time I wrote them in early Spring 2016. There are details in that verse and elsewhere in the song taken from real life. I composed this instrumental using Logic Pro X software starting in April 2016 and in composing it I was definitely inspired by Dr. Dre and Mel-Man’s production on Eminem’s song “***** Please II (feat. Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Nate Dogg and Xzibit)” off of his classic 2000 album The Marshall Mathers LP. The various takes from which my verses were assembled were recorded in Spring 2016 in Jamaica Plain, MA and also when DejaVu recorded the bulk of his verse in August 2016 at his place in Mashpee, MA. He recorded a minor lyrical correction later that year or in early 2017. My “I just wanna see can you hear me” part was an ad-libbed sound check I did that I didn’t originally intend to keep but ended up liking. Toward the end of the mixing and editing stage in late-Winter/Spring 2017 I added the dramatic, violent sound effects heard during the intro and others during certain parts of the verses to make it even more over-the-top. I will most likely be releasing an edited clean version of this song somewhere down the line. During the last chorus, the background vocals make a reference to Christina Aguilera's classic hit ballad "Beautiful" off of her 2002 album Stripped. His work spans multiple genres with a pop-centric focus. A graduate of UMass Lowell and Sturgis Charter Public School, Walton's involvement in music has been a longterm passion with a steady shift towards original material beginning in high school. From his beginnings with choral ensembles, avant garde lo-fi dadaist compositions and earnest cover songs, to his free-flowing explorations of hip hop, atmospheric R&B and plaintive pop melodies, Walton brings a unique perspective that is both vulnerable and playful, his vocals and ear for melody and rhythm forming much of the common element unifying his body of work. His modest career highlights have included performances at UMass Lowell's annual Mothers of Rock concert and various venues in Southeastern Massachusetts and the Greater Boston area. Currently he is in the process of assembling a short EP with producer Avi Haim Avliav of Avli Music Productions in Woodland Hills, CA, in addition to working on a variety of side projects and collaborations.
