简介

Kell Hvolbol and Preben Hojegaard grew up in the same area in Copenhagen and attended the same high school, but became friends only after a chance encounter in a club in Calella, Spain, while both were there on holiday. They quickly learned they shared a love for music and decided to explore their talents together. Kell had been part of a group of singer/songwriters, and had written songs since he was 15. Preben had a drawer full of unfinished lyrics. They found they enjoyed working together and started reworking old material and writing new songs within the year. In 1972 Kell and Preben met Bjarne Fehstedt, also of Copenhagen. Bjarne was a natural fit with the two and they decided to form a band. Bjarne was a disc jockey in his spare time and while he did not have a great deal of instrumental experience, he knew every song ever written and had a natural talent and joined the two in writing new songs. They first called their band, “The Pacemakers,” but, discovered that name was already taken and the three became, “Palpitation.” The core of each new song was usually an individual effort. But during rehearsals the group would offer suggestions and variations that invariably made the song a more finished product. Soon they had a catalog of over seventy pieces. They played together for several years. In the end their jobs and lives took them to different places and the difficulty of getting together to make music caused them to play together for the last time in April, 1981. All three never lost their love for music and joined different bands, and while they never again played under the “Palpitation,” marquee, they did leave behind an album that captured the essence of their sound. In 1975 the band picked twelve songs from their extensive catalog that best represented the music they had been writing and playing and made their first and only recording. In 1976 they went to the basement of a villa in Valby, Denmark, to make the recording. They couldn’t afford a professional studio and did what musicians have done forever – improvised. They used a big “reel-to-reel” stereo tape deck with two mikes. Lacking a main mixing board, they had to balance and pan the vocals and instruments by moving the mikes around. Every song was done in one take, as the tape deck could not overlay tracks. They named the recording, “GEORGE.” George was Kell’s Shih Tzu pet dog who, evidently having an ear for their style music, attended, voluntarily, almost all their rehearsal and recording sessions. Forty years after that improvised recording, and having new technologies that have made professional recording tools available to DIY music producers, they have decided to release a re-mastered version of “GEORGE.” All tracks have been re-mastered using the original tapes from the 1976 recording. The sound quality and sophistication of the recording has definitely improved, but the music retains the original sound of the sixties British beat revolution.
