Far from fitting into any one genre of music, Down to Earth - the introductory EP from newcomer Chris Guerrero and Co. which is the name of the band as well - at the same time combines its elements into a complementary whole that draws the listener into a world of pop-driven synths, raw guitar melodies, and hope infused lyrics. Down to Earth is a result of a two year vision about creating songs that celebrate the Christian culture and life without sacrificing musical quality. Drawing from both secular and sacred inspiration, the music seeks to create a bridge between indie and mainstream, feeling at times classic in its approach, yet creative in its nuanced execution. The opening song "Mountain of God" brings back an evocative late 80’s feel, with its breathy background vocals and gritty guitar lines (especially in the bridge) taking the stage as a play on the bible story from 1 Kings 19. “Light of the World” brings to mind Coldplay, especially in the introduction, and rises to a fiery dramatic finish in a non-traditional way. The third track is entitled “Grace” which lyrically serves to deliver a simple repetitive message of hope and mercy. Don’t be fooled by this simplicity however, the song is textured with a multitude of synths and motives combined in a fun pop style that will make your head bounce. The next song “Follow” is a slower ballad with a slow R&B drum beat. Slower anthem-like lyrics drive the vocal melody here, with a bridge that builds like a pseudo-dubstep arrangement giving it the full climax toward the end. The last track of the short album is the same as the band name and album “Down to Earth”. More traditional in approach, this nonetheless is a creative journey on a more worshipful experience that the young Christian might be used to. The longest of the five tracks, “Down to Earth” is probably the most layered piece, beautifully fusing all of its musical ingredients into an exciting and satisfying masterpiece. Down to Earth EP is accessible and imaginative, being a great glimpse into the start of what will hopefully be more to come from this artist.
