Chris Yohei Tokunaga is a Japanese/US American electronic music composer born in Kyoto and based in Berlin. Chris' productions are brimming with the kind of detail and precision that software allows, while warm and engaging. He brings together synthetic textures and arresting melodies, with some help from a regular cast of guest vocalists such as Nina Rotner and Laura Corallini. The lyricist for the Nights for Days project is Christine Tokunaga, who has worked as a primary school teacher, creating and staging theatre pieces for children. Juxtaposing modern production techniques with more traditional elements, He offers moods ranging from the melancholy to the epic, serene yet captivating. The four songs on his self-released debut EP flirt with the sounds of Arca and Hyperdub as well as Ella Fitzgerald and Blue Note. His familiar yet forward-thinking approach is why Chris Yohei Tokunaga is already luring in listeners. Song description: You and I: A song about getting lost. Being drawn into something seemingly enticing, and not finding your way back. Stay: A song about the ever-shifting relationship dynamics between humans/ the transient state of love. End of the Line: A song about harbouring resentment/ regrets. A song about a person who despite having an unfair and overly controlling character, wants to be understood and loved. Theresa: A song about bridging separations; a song about reuniting. It makes reference to landmarks that parallel the division of Berlin.
