简介
November was recorded live on November 2 2006 in Alix Goolden Hall, Victoria BC. The piano is a rebuilt Hamburg Steinway concert grand, and the sound is all natural, the piano and ambience captured by a pair of B&K 4006 microphones and the vocal by an AT AE3300 microphone. Easy and These Blues were written in 2004, first recorded on Another Time in 2005, and later in a full band version on That's Why (2007). Mysteries Of Love was written in 1999, this is the first recording, and it was included in a full orchestra version on That's Why (2007) November is an improvisation. Walking was written in 2005, and is also on That's Why (2007) Barrelhouse was composed by Bruce Cockburn and released in 1970 on his award winning album Night Vision, on which I played the piano. The Small Circus Suite was first composed and recorded in 1985. Originally for harpsichord, this version was adapted for solo piano in 1989. The harpsichord I played in 1985 was made by Matthew James Redsell. It was a double manual instrument with a 4 foot set of strings and two 8 foot sets. The music it is a challenge to play on piano and I left out They Walk Like This as it seemed unlikely to work well without the varied timbres and harmonics of the plucked strings. Included in this version are the pieces Small Circus I & II, Out Of My Hands, Another Door and I Wonder What's That? In this version the pieces run one into the other, which is how I first thought the suite should be played. The titles were created by my daughter Abigail, who was three years old, as she listened to the music coming out the door of my studio into the hallway. Thanks to Gail Bradshaw for the artwork, which features a solo piano player on the stage at Alix Goolden Hall.
