‘The Deep Woods’ is Red Yarn’s debut album, introducing him as a singular artist with a profound reverence for the folk tradition. In January 2013, after five years of research and performance, Andy received a grant to record his animal folksong adaptations. He enlisted friends from the Portland indie scene to fill out his basement Americana sound. His wife and singing partner Jessie added her close harmonies. At a Community Recording Session, 150 kids and parents contributed vocals and crowd sounds. The result is a 12-song journey into the old, weird American woods, where critters act out the fantasies of a nation. The album balances fresh takes on classics like “Froggie Went A-Courtin’” with dusty discoveries like “Rattlesnake.” Andy’s vocal delivery reveals his Texas roots and his heartfelt connection to these songs. As the forest rings with American sounds of all eras — from banjos and fiddles to electric guitars and synthesizers — a strange animal world comes to life.
