Shrooms. The name conjurs up certain images: an often misunderstood substance taking you on a trip to magical and colorful places and perhaps getting your mind to think in ways that it wouldn’t normally. A substance whose bizarre nature is off-putting to some in its mystery, while enticing to others in its potential for mental adventures. This is also the perfect way to describe Shrooms the artist. While he masquerades under the title of rapper, Shrooms is actually a jack of all trades. Hailing from the world of comedy before he crossed over into hip-hop, Shrooms prefers the title of entertainer to more fully encompass what he does. A rabidly enthusiastic melting pot rip-off of every influence he’s ever encountered, Shrooms hopes to take the audience on a journey into his world every time he hits the stage, playing the role of demented children’s host as he tries to get the audience as involved as possible. He has had training in many different areas, all beginning with his taking to the stage to try his hand at stand-up comedy back when he was on the East Coast. His two years wandering around the New York comedy scene culminated with making it through the first round of Last Comic Standing. It was all worth it when he got to see half his face on TV for about three seconds. After that he headed to California, where he tried his hand at writing, being a co-writer on four different screenplays, finishing a novel, writing many various skits and shorts, and performing with his comedy troupe at local theatres. After all that, he stumbled into something that he’d been obsessed with for over a decade: hip-hop music. While one might think that his history in the world of comedy would lead him to create goofy, funny rhymes, he actually takes his craft seriously, exhibiting an undying passion for lyricism and a devotion to spitting ferociously in an attempt to show the same qualites he saw in other rappers that made him so enamored. He doesn’t shy away from comedic lyrics, but his emphasis is always on honesty and meaning behind them. While he has a proclivity for gleefully offensive over-the-top cartoonish vulgarity, he also tries to incorporate introspective philosophy and personal ruminations to balance the mix. Shrooms is a symbiotic MC, and relies heavily on the beat and vibe it gives off to help guide his pen to what concepts and emotions will be covered. He is capable of covering any and all topics. Equal parts wordsmith, entertainer, rapper, clown, philosopher and cartoon character, Shrooms is a new breed of MC, bursting with originality and a contagious child-like excitement. He embraces both the untainted oddball charisma of an underground artist, while keeping his eye open to what will also appeal to the masses. Much like the substance he’s named after, he hopes to both entertain and make people think when they journey along on a trip with him. His multifacetedness makes him an ideal candidate to penetrate pop culture and work his influence on it, bringing a raw passion that his been absent from the scene back.
