Jazz sax legend Kirk Whalum's brother, Kevin Whalum, has been around for a good while. His first foray into the recording industry was back in 1993 when he sang background on his brother's CD entitled, "Cache". Since then, Kevin has either recorded, toured, or performed with some of music's most revered artists. Some of these are: Kirk, Stevie Wonder, the late George Duke, Michael McDonald, Lalah Hathaway, Maysa Leak, Take 6, Wynonna Judd, the late Wayman Tisdale, Jonathan Butler, Patti Austin, and James Ingram. His presence on his brother's CDs since the early 90's has been a staple that Kirk's fans not only look forward to, but even request. Kevin has a knack for "doing justice" to beloved cover songs such as: Johnny Guitar Watson's "TaTa You, Baby" (made into "Tata You, Jesus" via Kevin's cover in 2003), Luther Vandross's "Make Me A Believer" (which Kevin turned into a duet with Lalah Hathaway in 2007), and now the release of Al Green's "Simply Beautiful" with fellow Memphian, Wendy Moten, (who had her own hit with "Come In Out Of The Rain"), is no exception. It keeps the integrity of Mr. Green's original while modernizing the vocal performance with a raw maturity, and a sexy intimacy that Kevin and Wendy are well-equipped to provide. The only thing more captivating than Kevin and Wendy's studio performance is their stage show. They are a full-on entertainers. They are also both born and raised in Memphis, which-of course-is Al Green's hometown, so this is their tribute to the "Memphis Music" on which they grew up. Backing Kevin and Wendy on the song are: Jeff Pegues on drums; Joshua Lutz on acoustic & electric guitars; and Braylon Lacy on bass. Once a listener gets a taste of this raw soul, they want more, and they want it often. Kevin says he has big plans for 2014, so be on the look-out for this man...and the release of his new CD, "Soul Clean", due out Spring, 2014.
