'continuum' is the realization of a dream that has been gradually evolving for a number of years now, a concept for a series of 'live composition'-oriented concerts wherein the audience is invited to accompany me and/or other performers on a special kind of journey. I am interested in exploring the possibility of tapping into a musical flow - a continuum - which is 'out there' somewhere, and happening all the time, continuously... It just needs people - performers and listeners willing to collaborate in bringing something magical about, to bring it to life. This album represents the first leg of this journey. What sets this album apart from innumerable others is simply that it is a live recording; the audience contributed a powerful energy that helped me get outside of the 'safety zone' and into some very challenging and interesting spaces. 'continuum:one: solo piano' was recorded in concert, August 29, 1999 at the Philip T. Young Recital Hall at the University of Victoria, B.C., Canada. As much as possible without being neurotic about it, I tried to approach the piano with nothing pre-conceived at all in terms of what I was going to play. The resulting recording is 73 minutes of continuous, largely unedited 'flow' that is very difficult for me to claim authorship of - I simply got out of the way and let what wanted to happen, happen. It explores a number of themes which emerged of themselves in the first few minutes of play, finding and listening to where those themes might want to go, and how they might sound or feel in the various landscapeswe found ourselves in along the way. These themes are presented in the first audio clips of each section on the following pages. The titles I selected for the two sections in which the performance emerged are: 1) Nullius in Verba, which was the motto of the Royal Society of London, the worlds first organized international consortium of scientific knowledge, and which has been best translated as "take no-one's word for it; find out for yourself"... and 2) The Same River Twice, which refers to an old saying I like, to the effect that you cannot dip your foot into the same river twice - the river is always changing, in flow, alive with new possibilities. It is a good spirit, I think, in which to approach most things in life. Especially music.
