In the early 15th century, Portugal conquered Ceuta in North Africa and discovered the Madeira Islands, thus initiating its vast territorial expansion. By the early 16th century, Portugal had developed the most dominant maritime fleet in Europe. The tumultuous voyages of exploration filled sailors and their loved ones back home with “saudade,” (intense longing), nostalgia and sadness, but without ever loosing the glimmer of hope. My piece "Saudade" seeks to portray this deep sentiment.
