Jenn Beaupre is an award-winning performer and songwriter based in Calgary. During her decade-plus career, she has appeared on Canadian Idol and Stampede City Sessions, performed at the Vancouver Olympics, opened for the Moscow Ballet, won the Calgary Stampede’s Most Promising Young Artist Award, and sang the national anthem at several NHL games. Jenn’s vocal style is bold, agile, and eclectic—think Bette Midler meets Norah Jones with a splash of Katy Perry. Though she counts the late soul-folk artist Eva Cassidy as one of her main influences, modern artists like Adele, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Emili Sande, and Ray LaMontagne inspire and inform Jenn’s work. None of this, however, should suggest Jenn’s style is ad-hoc or derivative. After studying for several years under a classical voice teacher, Jenn decided to pursue pop music. Along the way, her unique style, along with her charisma and energy, has garnered substantial praise. Canadian Idol judge Sass Jordan said, “I love Jenn Beaupre — what a firecracker!” Recently, this style drew attention from Cirque du Soleil, who flew her out to Montreal for an audition. Singing, however, is only one aspect of Jenn’s role as an artist. “My job is not to be ‘a singer’— my job is to make you feel things. I’m an evoker, and elicitor of emotions.” Whether she’s behind a piano or in front of a camera, Jenn’s performances forge a strong connection with her audience. Loyal fans help Jenn fill small-and-midsize venues, and the videos on her popular Youtube channel have received thousands of supportive comments. As a songwriter, Jenn crafts honest, witty, and occasionally heart-wrenching tunes. One of her most-requested songs, “Protest Music,” is a tune about how a new romantic interest will never measure up to her father. In “Angel That’s Lost,” written in response to the tragic loss of a good friend’s brother, Jenn offers consolation for those trudging through the depths of grief: “Heaven has signs up for its lost and found / Looking for its angels who are stuck on the ground.” Jenn has released two records (Lullabies for Grownups and This Time) and is currently recording a third with Toronto-based producer Jerome Pinder. Her as-yet-untitled work represents a significant step in a new direction. While her previous albums showcased her voice with stripped-down, sugary-sweet arrangements, her new work aims to synthesize her piano-and-voice roots with a more modern, electro-pop feel. “I Want It All,” one of Jenn’s newest tunes, layers synthesizers and Jenn’s vocals overtop a driving dance beat. In “I Feel Everything,” vocals, piano, and strings carry the song toward a dubstep break before resolving into the final chorus. If her previous recordings were meant for an intimate coffee shop, her new tunes beg to boom from the speakers of a European dance club. Besides working on a new album, Jenn currently gives about fifty performances per year. Like Jenn’s new recordings, many of these upcoming performances will be larger, multi-instrument productions, while others will continue to showcase Jenn’s piano and vocal work.
