by Andy Kellman A release on Richie Hawtin 's Minus label somehow made Mathew Jonson more legit with some techno cynics, even though the producer had already racked up spots on mix albums from Carl Craig , Daniel Bell , Ricardo Villalobos , and Swayzak . If Hawtin 's the ultimate gatekeeper, so be it, but there was too much riding on this release for all of the wrong reasons. "Decompression" itself is certainly another fine addition to Jonson's expanding catalog, but the label of release shouldn't make it more than what it is. The track -- a dark, deeply percussive thing with unnerving synth creakings -- does make it evident that Jonson intends to continue developing his sound. "Ultraviolet Dream," the B-side, shouldn't be disregarded. Coming closer to resembling the tracks with chunkier rhythms made during his 2002/2003 run of releases, it carries some excellent neo-trance undercurrents that begin to surface a couple minutes in and continue to escalate in volume without taking over the whole of the track.
