There is a definite character to composer Gina Biver's writing. As in previous reviews, her music entails vividly illustrated textures, utilizing modern classical, jazz, world, and minimalist details and structures. Although it might sound like too great a mix of elements, the music comes to be more like a voyage, seamlessly moving the listener from one landscape to another. This most recent set of "downtown" music explores new territory for Biver, who has reached beyond rhythmic regularity and into free use of flighty, soaring digressions that somehow carry us with them. Curious groupings of instruments add color and unusual textures, with everything from synthesizers to marimbas and world percussion.
