Round the World

I recently did a solo piano recording for the Unseen Rain label. And as I reflected upon the experience a few new visions appeared. I was at a museum once and saw some Rauschenburg paintings. My mother lifted my eyes to this artist. I always listened to her words in the area of painters and painting. Her words were usually subtle and few but inevitably right on the money as regarding things that have brought interest to me in that area. So Rauschenburg’s paintings were chaotic and a bit messy but within was an intricate amount of material. Places to go, adventures to experience and they all came to me as if I was on an adventure. Even though there was a tapestry of different experiences, they were framed within the confines of this one long adventure, giving the piece glue. A daily travel or a walk with the typical amount of variety that comes when you put yourself out there in the world. It seems now in my work more than ever that the variety of genres available, including the genre of my individual style, are expanding to such a degree that I feel free to move in and out of any place as I choose to be there, no matter how long I stay. And this tapestry is glued together by the natural evolution of my walk or adventure. And is not defined in a chronological order but can move in and out of time past present future or imaginative. The other vision I had went like this: At one point I heard a familiar song in my head. A standard, a romantic piece, but complex and in depth with chord changes. I didn’t know the song to play it on the piano. Nor was I even capable of singing the song throughout in my head. But I felt its approximate distances in melody and I applied my own harmony. So the vision of this piece created a structure to play off of and even trace around. It gave me a diagram of a beautiful melodic excursion and format. And I used this premise to sketch off of.
