2011's "Metal Renaissance", A Sound of Thunder's first full-length album, builds upon the foundation of classic, melodic metal exhibited on the band's 2010 debut EP, and ups the ante by expanding into new musical territory. The Sabbath/Priest/Maiden influence still dominates, as do the clean but powerful female lead vocals, but new elements are on display, from the time signature changes and diminished chords on "Flesh and Blood", to the proggy intro of "The Beast", to the tribal drumming and guttural vocals of "Blood Vomit". "Of Wood and Steel" is a fast-paced metal number with a delicate intro, equal parts Maiden and modern power metal. The album's center-piece is the ten minute epic "My Name Is Doom", a Sabbathy dirge in honor of everyone's favorite evil doctor. "Devil in Disguise" is an homage to '70s blues-based metal, featuring a soulful vocal performance and drenched in bluesy lead guitar. The album climaxes in experimental territory with "The Buried Truth", starting out firmly in metal territory with a huge riff, driving beat, and instantly memorable chorus, and ending with a full on gospel choir combining with soaring lead vocals to end the proceedings on a high note.

With "Metal Renaissance", lead vocalist Nina Osegueda, guitarist Josh Schwartz, drummer Chris Haren, and bassist Jesse Keen have created a solid slab of metal in the tradition of great metal albums past. The title informs the contents: there are no prefixes needed here - no "death", "power", "prog", or "black" required. Simply put...THIS IS METAL!
