Farrell Brothers : "This Is A Riot". RAUCOUS RECORDS: Raucous Records has been releasing Rockabilly related music since the mid-1980s. This sampler shows how diverse the Rockin' scene is. There is Rock 'n' Roll, Rockabilly, Rhythm & Blues and much more here, with performances and production which is sometimes very authentic and could have been recorded in the original Rock 'n' Roll era, and at other times very modern and very much today. What matters is that all of these bands are contributing in their own way to Rock 'n' Roll. Each has their own style and all have original material in their respective repertoires. We're lucky to have such a diverse scene which allows bands to stamp their own identity of 1950s based music rather than having to churn out note-for-note covers. Please support these bands by seeing them play live, or by searching out the albums of the ones you like best. It is the bands such as the ones on this sampler that keep our scene alive and constantly provide us with new and fresh rockin' music. THE CRAWDADS: This Manchester Rockabilly 4-piece has been rockin\' since the mid-1980s when their first recorded material appeared on the legendary Northwood Records label. They cut their first full album for Raucous Records at the end of the decade, and it wasn\'t until recently that they followed up with their second. The Crawdads combine the original 1950s Rockabilly style with edgy original songwriting. "Little Lil" however shows how well they can cover a 50s rocker, and is taken from their recent album \"Released\" (RAUCD 199). SHAUN HORTON & THE TENNESSEE TRIO: With a sound that would be at home on a Rarest Rockabilly & Hillbilly Bop collection, Shaun Horton sounds more like a 1950s Hillbilly Cat from the Southern States than a Northern lad from England. Originally simply called The Tennessee Trio, the name was expanded to include singer Shaun at the fore after line-up changes prior to their third album "Nothin' But Right" (RAUCD 152). It is from this album that we select the uptempo "Have Myself A Time". One of the British Roots & Rockabilly scene\'s best kept secrets, look out for good things in future from Horton. DANNY B. HARVEY: Anyone with a half-decent collection of post-1980s Rockabilly will have seen the name Danny B Harvey on albums by Levi Dexter, The Rockats, The Honeydippers and others. One of the leading guitar players in American Rockabilly and beyond, Harvey has been selected to work with legendary artists like Wanda Jackson and Nancy Sinatra both in the studio and on tour. He is also the guitar play for Lemmy of Motorhead's Rockabilly trio "The Head Cat" and Rockabilly super-group "13 Cats". Danny has cut two great albums for Raucous. "Travis Rag" is taken from his guitar-pickin' collection "Rockabilly Jazz" (RAUCD 162). He also has a storming Rock\'n\'Roll album "Live In Montreal" (RAUCD 182). UNION AVENUE: Styled on the 1950s Johnny Cash Sun Sound, Union Avenue avoid being a run-of-the-mill tribute band by predominantly playing contemporary Rock songs how Cash may have performed them in his early career. Their cover of Motorhead's "Ace Of Spades" earned them record of the week on BBC Radio One, and soon they were playing major festivals worldwide as well as gigging the UKs rockin' venues. Take a listen to their Man In Black style interpretation of Billy Idol's classic "White Wedding" and if it leaves you wanting more, then look for the album "Now Here\'s Union Avenue" (RAUCD 173), the mini-album "Ace Of Spades" (RAUCD 088) and the EP "Teenage Kicks" (RAUCD 172). THE BLUE FLAMES: This 4-piece mix Chicago Blues with Memphis Rockabilly, hence the title of their debut album "Memphis To Chricago". This rip-roaring version of The Big O\'s Sun Rockabilly classic \"Mean Little Mama\" is taken from their most recent CD "Juke" (RAUCD 143). After years hard gigging on the UK Rockin\' scene, the Blue Flames are now deservedly being recognized by a wider audience with the festivals on the continent battling to snap them up. Catch them at the excellent "Rockin' Race" fest in Malaga next February. In the meantime the Blue Flames are working on material for their 3rd album - but until then seach out their two previous CDs and you'll be pleased that you did! THE BIG HEAT: A mighty Eight-Piece music machine, The Big Heat pump out red hot 'n' rockin' Jump Blues complete with a hard-driving boogie piano, a honking horn section and powerhouse vocals along with the guitar, bass & drums. They boast one of the classiest repertoires on the circuit with a barrel-load of rhythms from legendary Rhythm & Blues masters such as Wynonie Harris, Amos Milburn, T-Bone Walker and Big Joe Turner. "Slowly Losing My Mind" as a scorcher taken from their solid album "Boogie Men" (RAUCD 177). THE TRISONICS: With frontman Derek Singleton playing his Gretsch guitar with a twang that could only come from a Texan, The Trisonics display a knack for writing catchy songs which cross over the Americana and Rockabilly genres. The delivery from the stripped-down but solid rhythm section shows that The Trisonics are no traditionalists, yet manage to retain the rockin' roots of their music. "Mystery Lady" is a selection from their debut album "Rock 'n' Roll Remedy" (RAUCD 171), which they swiftly followed up with a second CD release "Welcome To The Club" (RAUCD 209). THE JIVE ROMEROS: The Jumpin' Jivin' sounds of early American Rockers such as Freddie Bell and Bill Haley sit comfortably alongside songs from British Rock 'n 'Roll originals Tommy Steele, Art Baxter and Tony Crombie in the repertoire of The Jive Romeros. Boasting ex-members of The Stargazers and The Bedrocks in their line-up, The Jive Romeros have become one of the biggest names in Big Beat and are a major attraction at Rock 'n' Roll and Retro-Swing Fests. "Look So Deep" is a fabulous track taken from their "Build Up" album (RAUCD 175) which shows that the Romeros are equally capable of serving up original material as they are reviving greats from the original era. THE CAT PACK: This 20-piece Rockin', Rollin' Big Band gives Brian Setzer and Jools Holland\'s orchestras a run for their money! These Cats deliver albums and live shows Packed with masterful arrangements and superb musical performances, with excellent featured vocalists belting out a mix of Jump Jiving Rock\'n\'Roll, Swing and Jump Blues classics and originals. The formation of this orchestra is a triumph for band-leader Richard Blanchard, and among the featured singers you will find Lisa George who has recently recorded her debut solo album in a more Rockabilly style. Search out the two Cat Pack CDs "It Ain't What You Do" (RAUCD 180) and "Everybody Wants To Be A Cat" (RAUCD 130), and then Lisa George's CD "The Devil Said Shake!" (RAUCD 221). CATHOUSE CREEPERS: If you like the hard-hitting Rockabilly sounds of early 1980s 'Cat' bands The Stray Cats, The Polecats and The Blue Cats, then The Cathouse Creepers are for you. Updating the 80s "Neo-Rockabilly" style, The Creepers swiftly avoided the Rock 'n' Roll & Jive clubs in favor of Rock venues where they blast out their hard-edged Rockabilly to appreciative music-lovers without being told to turn it down. Off to a flying start with gigs opening for the legendary Stray Cats, they were then asked to be support band once again when Stray Cats bass-man toured the UK in his own right. Raucous Records proudly released The Creepers debut album "Fast Lane" (RAUCD 168) and the full-throttle title track is presented here. DRUGSTORE COWBOYS: A rockin' trio led by guitar-whizz Nick 'Slim' Whitfield, The Drugstore Cowboys have rocked out of their native Leicester with rockin' rhythms inspired by the best American roots-rock guitar bands. Whitfield rightfully makes no secret of his admiration for Dave Gonzales of The Paladins, and the Drugstore Cowboys fit comfortably into the expanding European Roots Rock 'n' Roll scene alongside bands like The Seatsniffers and Smokestack Lightning. A powerful blend of Rockabilly, Country & Blues which relies predominently on original material of which the dance-floor hit "Game Over" is a prime example. Their Raucous album is called \"Crash & Burn\" (RAUCD 047) and their "Chop Poker" album is available from Raucous too. THE KING DRAPES: Raucous constantly seeks out originality, and found plenty in Finland's King Drapes. A Teddyboy Rock'n'Roll style trio among the many, but distinctive vocals and guitar and originality in their songwriting ensures that The King Drapes stand out from the crowd. You can hear more of their Raucous album "Rockabilly Rules" (RAUCD 164) or you can also pick up their import-only release "Top Fuel Rockabilly". Despite line-up changes, The King Drapes are still regularly gigging Scandinavia and beyond. TEDDY TRIGGER & THE GATLING GUNS: This Rockabilly Rumble boasts modern, powerful production which crashes way beyond the boundaries of authenticity, and shows why Teddy Trigger & The Gatling Guns following is only partly made up of the bequiffed. The lyrics and the pulsating rhythms are pure Rockabilly, but the delivery is far more powerful than any kind of 50s retro, making Rockabilly Rhythms accessible to the mainstream, but without compromise. Their self-titled album (RAUCD 189) from which this track is taken rocks hard throughout, but stays true to it's Rockabilly roots. THE YOUNG SAVAGES: Raw, savage 50s style Rockabilly delivered with youthful energy. The Young Savages are three brothers from Bristol who served up a scorching debut album called "Untamed" (RAUCD 115) which includes a great bunch of original songs alongside covers of Larry Donn and Hank Penny. "Top Down Mama" is one such original and features Polecat Boz Boorer guesting on Saxophone. THE FARRELL BROS: More sibling Rockabilly here, but this time we head to Canada. Take the vocal harmonies of The Everly Brothers delivered with the attitude of The Clash and you get something close to what The Farrell Bros deliver on their album "Dead End Boys" (RAUCD 195). The boundaries between Rockabilly, Punk Rock and Country become non-existent as the Farrells fuse together diverse influences from different genres and decades creating a cocktail that is unique, explosive and totally rockin'!
