Magic is the word. It is all over this CD. Surrounded by outstanding musicans Johnny spins his tales with a voice that is both authoritative and personal. He is in a class by himself but has been compared vocally to both Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters. Produced by E.R. Saunders this LP is will surprize you. It is deeply soulful blues but also touches on rock, country soul and a pinch of the psychadelia. It begins with an " incantation" to put you in the mood and then jumps right into it. The country soul comes in the form of a story song called "Tell the judge I'm in Love". It reminds one a little of Authur Alexander and it features grammy winning tromboneist Sheffer Bruton with KGO featured vocalist Amy Scruggs on back up vocals. Violinist and multi-talented Austin Trujillo appears on two cuts. Saunders himself is already receiving rave reviews for his guitar work on "Fist of Iron". Every cut is wonderful but the best is saved for last. The hard-driving party dance song "Spiderwalk" brings it to a powerful frenzied climax. You can't go wrong with this one if you like soulful blues. You WILL play it over and over!
