검은 하늘이 태양을 감추고 빗방울은 세차게 창문을 두드렸다. 우리가 이곳에 머무른 지 며칠이 지났는지 생각에 잠겨갈 때 즈음 누군가가 문을 두드리는 소리가 들렸다. 누군가 올 것을 예상이라도 한 듯 동료 중 한 사람이 자연스럽게 문을 열었다. 문이 열리자 방안으로 시린 공기가 밀려들어 왔다. 동료는 무언가를 받아들며 즐겁게 이야기하기 시작했다. “슬슬 출발하지 않으면 안 되겠어...” 나는 중얼거렸다. 나는 조급했다. 앞으로 얼마나 더 가야 할지 알지도 못하는데 이렇게 멈춰 있을 수만은 없었다. 나는 이야기를 꺼내려 고개를 돌리자, 문을 닫으며 그가 말했다. “할 이야기가 있는데, 이거라도 먹으면서 이야기할까?” 조금 전 받아든 것을 들어 올리며 말했다. 그것을 물끄러미 바라보고 있자니, 그는 다른 동료들이 있는 곳으로 걸어가며 나에게 손짓했다. 나는 들리지 않을 정도의 작은 한숨을 쉬고 모두가 있는 곳으로 걸어갔다. 잠깐 동안의 정적이 흐른 뒤 동료 중 한 사람이 입을 열었다. “우리가 요 며칠간 이곳에 머무르면서 생각을 해봤는데...” 그리고 다시 정적이 흘렀다. 한여름의 습한 공기처럼 답답하고 무거운 기분이 몰려왔다. 그러자 다른 동료가 먹을 것을 건네며 입을 열었다. “비가 너무 거세서 당분간은 출발할 수 없을 것 같은데 이왕 이렇게 된 거 우리말이야...” 나는 그 말을 끝까지 듣지 않은 체 등을 돌렸다. 언제라도 출발할 수 있도록 나의 짐은 싸져 있었고, 나는 밖으로 달려나갔다. 당장에라도 얼어붙을 것처럼 차가운 빗방울이 나의 얼굴을 때렸다. 이 비가 그치고 나면, 완연한 겨울이 올 것 이다.

Darkness of the sky hid the sun, and the raindrops started to hit the window side. I was counting how many days we spent in this place, and someone knocked on the door. As it was expected to have a visitor, one of the colleagues got up and opened the door. Through the open door, chill air entered the room. The colleague received something from the visitor and started to talk with excitement. "We gotta start moving..." I whispered. I was anxious. We can't stay in because we don't even know how far we should go. As I turned my face to talk about this, the colleague closed the door and said, "I have something to say. Shall we take a bite and talk about it?" He lifted up the thing he just got. As I was watching him, he walked to other colleagues and waved at me. I sighed as no one in the room could hear and walked to the other people. After a while of silence, other colleague started to talk. "I've been thinking as we stayed here for few days..." and there was another moment of silence. The atmosphere was heavy and pressured like the humid air in mid-summer. Another colleague passed around the food and said, "I guess we can't start moving in this rain, and just because of all this, let's..." I turned around before he finished the sentence. I packed everything so we can leave any time, and I ran outside. Icy cold raindrop started to hit my face. After this rain, there will be a complete winter.
