Following on from “Grace is the Ocean” (1999) – my first attempt to professionally capture the best songs of praise that I’d written up to that point – and “Grunt” (2006) – an original Easter musical with a distinctive Aussie feel, written in collaboration with Wal Spencer – comes my most mature collection of devotional songs to date, “The Message of the Cross”.

With this selection, I’ve sought to make the message clearer by keeping the arrangements simpler. You’ll notice a distinct country feel in some of the songs – certainly more pronounced than on my past albums. This comes in part from the influence of the Aboriginal Christian community of my Australian country home town, Narrandera. The songs are more acoustically driven than on previous releases, and there’s even a touch of Bodidley. I sing many of these songs at church with the congregation.
