"The Verge" was forged a little over three years ago by three members of "The Melody Kings," a late 80s power pop quartet that had broken up 17 years beforehand. "The Kings" were a NYC-based club act with a lot of energy and potential--great songs, strong melodies, provocative lyrics, musical variety, solid chops, and absolutely no business sense. The reunion of Sean Devlin and Gerry Barnas (Bill Popp & The Tapes) as The Verge happened after drummer Martin Blazy watched way too many episodes of VH1 classic band reunions. The Verge's first rehearsal (without a bass player) was a revelation: three married fathers (each have two children, each a boy and a girl), all approaching their middle years, discovered to their never ending delight that they all played a damn sight better (and louder) than when they were snotty, insecure young punks. Guest bassist Mary Noecker (DR. MARY) joined the lineup for rehearsals and club dates (CBGBs for one), and the band billed itself as "The Verge & Mary." Conservative Christians and pompous hypocrites immediately accused the band of sacrilege. At an imaginary news conference attended by zero members of the press, Juan Fianza protested in a mock Lennonesque Liverpudlian accent, "That's joost who we are, man, The Ve'g 'n' Mary. We didn't even realize it sounded like "The Virgin Mary," our blessed moother. To no one's surprise, Juan has reclaimed his position as the band's most prolific songwriter, churning out hits, near hits, fouls, strikeouts and near misses at a volume that has inspired his bandmates to cry out, "No more! Enuf awreddy!" But to no avail. Juan is a serial songwriter. Gerry, on the other hand, is a serious songwriter. "I take a little longer, but my tunes are often stronger and, certainly, not longer"--an oblique reference to the excruciating long-play formats that Juan prefers, trying listeners' patience and causing audio fatigue. Like some of the best bands, The Verge are family, in a perpetual state of hope, on the verge of breaking through with the uplifting support of fans, like you, who are clicking these pages. After decades of obscurity, toiling along the borders of respectability, aspiring for an invitation into the vineyards of pop stardom and commercial success, The Verge believe that all the pieces are now in place to help them reach their personal best or flame out in one spectacular great ball of fire.
