Letters of Love is a collection of some of the greatest love letters ever written. Spoken and set to original music by voice actor Jerry Buckner, these letters offer intimate looks at many of history's most famous love affairs. Track 1: Letter from Sullivan Ballou to Sarah Ballou,1861 - In July, 1861, during the Civil War, the second Rhode Island Volunteers received orders they would be shipping out soon. Sullivan, a Union Major in that unit decided to write his wife Sarah a letter before departing. Although not a professional, few writers have ever penned such a moving tribute to love and life as Major Ballou did that summer day. A week later he would parish in the fighting at the first battle of Bull Run. Sarah never remarried. Track 2: Letter from Nathaniel Hawthorne to Sophia Peabody,1839 - In 1838, Nathaniel Hawthorne began corresponding with Elizabeth Peabody, a well known socialite in Salem, MA. She anticipated a proposal of marriage from him, but it was her sister Sophia with whom he was truly in love. Their passion would lead to a long and happy marriage. Track 3: Letter from Gustave Flaubert to Lousie Colet,1846 - French novelist, Gustave Flaubert first met the attractive and rebellious Lousie Colet at the studio of a sculpture. He was immediately taken by her beauty and believed their meeting to be predestined. Probably the love of his life, Gustave exchanged over 200 erotic letters with Colet. Track 4: Letter from Victor Hugo to Adele Foucher,1822 - Victor Hugo the famed French novelist and poet, gave the world two pieces of work, Les' Miserables and the Hunchback of Notre Dame. He married Adele Foucher, his childhood sweetheart in 1822. Track 5: Letter from Jack London to Charmaine Kittredge,1903 - In front of his circle of friends, novelist Jack London was soundly beaten in a full contact-fencing duel with the beautiful and rebellious Charmaine Kittredge. From that moment on he pursued her passionately with one romantic letter after another. They eventually married and spent their lives traveling the world as lovers and good friends. Track 6: Letter from John Keats to Fanny Brawne,1819 - Considered one of the all-time great romantic poets, John Keats fell deeply in love with Fanny Brawne in 1818. Their engagement in 1819 was met with great resistance from Fanny's parents. In addition John's health was failing and he had no money. Brokenhearted and sick with tuberculosis, he made his way from London to Italy in the fall of 1820 where he would succumb to the illness on February 23, 1821 Track 7: Letter from Napoleon Bonaparte to Josephine Bonaparte,1796 - Napoleon and Josephine were married on March 8, 1796. Within days however, he was off to Italy on a military campaign. His passion for her was overwhelming. Twice daily, he dispatched messengers to her carrying letters filled with love and anxiety. Track 8: Letter from Edgar Allen Poe to Annie L. Richmond, 1848 - Considered the greatest mystery writer of the nineteenth century, Edgar Allen Poe could never quite put his personal life together. After the death of his wife Virginia in 1847, he found himself broke and lonely. After pursuing a number of woman, it was Annie Richmond who stole his heart. His letters to her were quite passionate, but to no avail. She was married and refused to leave her husband. Track 9: Letter from Stendhal (Henri Beyle) to Madame Dembowski,1819 - Stendhal, a brilliant political novelist in early19th Century Europe was also a deeply passionate man. Ha had many loves, but none he adored more than Madame Dembowski. Although he pursued her intensely, she was uninterested in establishing a relationship with him. Track 10: Letter from Ernest Hemmingway to Mary Welsh,1944 - Hemmingway was a man who suffered from severe depression and anxiety. It was in Mary Welsh that he found solace from his haunting insecurities. Meeting in a London bar during WWII, he was immediately drawn to her and asked her to lunch, even though she was in the company of one of his friends. She accepted and eventually became his fourth and final wife.
