"Senator's Lament," at once beautiful and disarmingly cutting, ruminates on the regrets of an aging North Carolina senator as s/he contemplates the inadequacies of legislation regarding the environment and energy policy, and the abuse of youth who work in the state's fields, growing and picking the food we eat. The EP begins with Mary Johnson Rockers' haunting, spare rendition of her original folk song, produced by Jesse Huebner. Next is a "remake" conceived by multi-instrumentalist and composer Matt Douglas, a fetching indie-rock take on the original that recasts it as something of an incantation. The final track, a remix by producer Direwolf, was created specifically to accompany choreographed modern dance; as such, it explodes the song, reframing a few of its lyrics, playing with its moods and re-imagining its rhythms to create something wholly new and mesmerizing.
