The first two pieces on this CD are from the Baroque period performed on a Baroque cello. While the Gabrielli is lesser known, the Bach is standard repertoire. Walton's "Passacaglia," written in 1982, borrows from the Baroque dance while utilizing contemporary tonality. The two female composers met while attending the Eastman School of Music. Kala Pierson's "River Spinner," written in 2012, is the most recent piece on the CD. Malina Rauschenfels both wrote and performed "Journey," which was originally premiered in Carnegie Hall in 2002. The CD closes with a stunning piece in extended just intonation written in 2006 by Toby Twining.
