HV039 The Eight - Missing Parts This is The Eight, a solo-project of Kyiv-based musician Max Dankevich. Being primarily a screenwriter and movie producer Max is also recording guitar music based on simple harmonies and melodies, yet very complex due to the use of sound effects and processing. It can be described as guitar ambient with meditative repeats, simple melodies that dissolve one into another, and also huge spaces, created by echoes and delays. The Eight on web: www.facebook.com/the8music Reviews: Soft and subtle, the Eight’s “Missing Parts” is full of quiet joys. Throughout the album the Eight opt for the road less traveled. By letting their songs expand graciously the Eight explore the luxurious soundscapes of glistening guitars, of shoegaze-like textures devoid of the oftentimes abrasive nature of that sound. Over the course of the album the Eight resembles a more rock-centric kind of Stars of the Lid. Quite beautiful with their patient pieces the songs choose for impressionistic textures letting the songs drift by with a feeling of tenderness built into their DNA. A delicate ebb and flow of sound defines the album opener “moom”. When the song comes into full bloom everything feels pitch perfect from the resonant guitar to the endless expanse the guitars punctuate. “svi” takes a similar approach with washed out glorious guitars doing magical, almost mystical kinds of things. Tense in tone is the angular work of “saabi” whose echo and delay are particularly moving. Going for a pastoral sound is “pooli” with an atmosphere that teems with life. Seemingly endless is the comforting disorientating approach of “sass”. Easily the highlight of the album is the moody “gaal” where the smallest details are amplified for great effect. Bringing the album to a contemplative close is the steady rhythm of “dali bude”. The Eight’s “Missing Parts” as perfect as watching the clouds move gracefully across the sky, with a naturalistic approach employed lovingly.
