简介
Think of flute and the first name that comes to your mind is that of Hariprasad Chaurasia; he has been so much synonymous with flute. For over three decades he has been exploring the musical possibilities of this instrument and taken the technique so further that it is impossible for others it overtake him. He has experimented with different styles of playing, the gayaki stvle, the instrumental style, the folk style and even the western style. He has experimented with production of tone, methods of blowing and methods of fingering. He is a master of the classical style and he is equally at ease with the film recordings or fusion music. He has created new ragas, he has scored music for films … the versatility of this man is indeed amazing! Chaurasia began his training in music with Pandit Rajarao of Allahabad, as a vocalist. He then came under the influence of Pandit Bholanath from Banaras who was a great flutist and learnt with him for about five years. Later he worked with AIR Cuttack as a staff artist. During his stay in Orissa he happened to meet Annapurna Devi, the genius daughter of Ustad Allauddin Khan Since 1962, he has been receiving knowledge from her. Chaurasia has never looked back in his career. He has performed all over the world and everywhere he has been received with honor. A number of titles have been conferred on him. The popularity of his compact discs and normal cassettes has never waned. He is a crowd puller with all age groups, in a11 the regions A powerful, pure and sweet tone blending perfectly with the background drone, immaculate phrasing, 1eisurely alaps and swift taans accented with criss-cross rhythrnic patterns, control of breath and extreme sweetness are only some features of his style. Ever since he started playing at the Savai Gandharva Festival, Puneites began waiting for him every year. He is a regular player at this conference for years and every year the recital has a unique fresh appeal. Raga Chandrakauns A night melody derived by sharpening the seventh note in the scale of 'vfalakauns. Chandrakauns thus becomes a pentatonic scale with the first, fourth and seventh notes natural and the third and sixth flattened. [Sa, Komal Ga; Ma, Komal Dha and Ni]. It is a raga with a great emotional appeal. Hariprasadji with his immense mastery on the instrument has explored the raag thoroughly. . Zakir Hussain's accompaniment on the tabla is equally praiseworthy. It is 'Sangat' in the true sense of the word-going together. If Chaurasia has produced the notes of the raga on his flute, Zakir has reproduced them on his 'bayan' (the bass drum). It is like listening raag Chandrakauns on the tabla. During the 'gat' playing in the Rupak tal both the artists have complemented each other in such a manner that one feels they have a common brain for thinking, for creating such heavenly music Dadra Dhun A lilting dhun with a typical pastroral feeling and the inimitable Chaurasia style. His dhuns have a magical quality about them - thev make you swing to the rhythm.. as if being rocked gently on the waves of joy and they make you forget the surroundings totally. This dhun, with traces of Pahadi and Manz Khamaj is no exception to that enthralling experience. Ustad Zakir Hussain No tabla-player todav has such a tremendous 'star-value' as Zakir Hussain. His success is indeed phenomenal. He is an instant success on any platform - from Jazz to Classical Indian Music. Years before, when he performed or the Savai Gandharva platform, he was the 'son of Ustad Alla Rakha' Todav he has rose to the degree of an Ustad himself. Over the years, he has acquired formidable knowledge of Tabla. He produces the most difficult Quaidas, Relas, Parans, Chakradhars or Tihais with unbelievable ease. His speed, clarity and tonal quaiity are par excellence. He is the perfect accompanist for any type of music - vocal, instrumental, dance and today - even fusion music. Zakir adds a lot to the enjoyment of the listener and inspires the co-artist to bring out the best. That is possible, because Zakir is not merely a percussionist but an imaginative and sensitive musician at heart. He improvises in such a manner that the basic beauty of the presentation is not harmed. And while he is solo-ing It's nothing but thrill!
