As bandleader for the Cleveland pop-rock act Saul Glennon, Jack Rugan has also dabbled in instrumental pop music. "I've always been a fan of those 60's albums by Burt Bacharach. I really enjoy his instrumental versions of some of the most popular songs of that decade. In addition to being groomed on the music of the Beatles, my parents were big fans of Herb Alpert and the Tijuana brass. I think that influence is felt in this music as well"

Pine Needles was originally released privately to family and friends in December 1999 as an alternative to "same old Christmas music you hear over and over and over again", as the way Jack puts it. Response was very positive and after Jack remastered the recordings this year, he decided to release it commercially.
