Ruby Hinds - Mezzo-soprano A singer of great brilliance and versatility, RUBY HINDS continues to excite us with her most recent triumph as Marian Anderson in See there in the distance, which chronicles the life and accomplishments of the legendary Contralto at the Beverly Hills Playhouse. Due to the overwhelming response the standing room only performances were extended. The piece debuted under the auspices of the Torrance Symphony in Los Angeles, CA. Ms. Hinds then brought this unique program to the stage of the Redlands Bowl Festival, which was broadcast, on PBS. Ms. Hinds was invited to bring “See there in the Distance” to the 1998 National Association of Negro Musicians National Convention in Las Vegas, as their Gala Artist. In February 2001, See there in there in the distance had its New York debut at the LaGuardia Performing Arts Center and June 2001, at the Orange County Performing Arts Center, California. Ms. Hinds thrilled audiences with her portrayal Amneris in Verdi’s Aida at the Redlands Bowl under the baton of Maestro Frank Fetta. Ms. Hinds garnered critical acclaim from her debut performance of Venus in Wagner's Tannhauser, for the Hawaii Opera Theatre in Honolulu. Ms. Hinds made her debut with both the New York City Opera and Houston Grand Opera in the title role of Leroy Jenkin's opera-ballet The Mother of Three Sons. These engagements were a result of her overwhelming success in the world premiere at the Munich Biennale Festival. Ms. Hinds sang her first Adalgisa in Kentucky Opera's production of Bellini's Norma. Ms. Hinds had the distinction of singing her first Wagnerian role, Ortrud, in Europe with the New Bulgarian Opera, in its premier season. Ms. Hinds essayed the role of Eboli in Don Carlo for the Nice Opera. A performance of Mahler's Resurrection Symphony brought this artist back to the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Hollywood Bowl. Ms. Hinds first came into prominence when she made her European operatic debut at the Rome Opera in Philip Glass and Robert Wilson's The Civil Wars. Since then she has appeared in concert versions of this work in New York and with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and fully staged productions for the Next Wave Festival at the Brooklyn Academy of Music and the Netherlands Opera. So great was her success in Amsterdam that she was engaged to appear in the opening production for the new opera house in Otto Ketting's Ithaka. Other operatic performances for Ms. Hinds include appearances in Philip Glass and Bob Moran's The Juniper Tree, directed by Andrei Serban, at the American Repertory Theatre in Boston and the title role in Carmen for Opera Ebony in Canada. Ms. Hinds' Carnegie Hall debut took place in Lucrezia Borgia with Eve Queler's Opera Orchestra of New York. She has also appeared at the Hollywood Bowl in a performance of the Mahler Symphony No. 8 with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, under the baton of Michael Tilson-Thomas, as well as in a special concert with that orchestra in which she performed works by Mahler, Wolf, and Berlioz, with Neal Stulberg on the podium. Ms. Hinds' was invited by Maestro Stulberg to be the soloist for his opening concert with the New Mexico Symphony in a performance of Prokofiev's Alexander Nevsky. Ms. Hinds appeared in a performance of the Beethoven Symphony No. 9 at Tully Hall in Lincoln Center, conducted by Yehudi Menuhin. She also appeared on the Gershwin Gala which Maestro Tilson-Thomas conducted at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, and which appeared on the PBS television series "Great Performances". Ruby Hinds made her California recital debut at California Institute of Technology's Ramo Auditorium. She made her New York Philharmonic debut on the orchestras chamber series and, two days later, her National Symphony debut at the Kennedy Center in Washington with Maestro Frühbeck de Burgos conducting. The Washington concert was shown in part on the PBS-TV special "Moods and Music". Ms. Hinds appeared with the New York Philharmonic as a soloist in the Beethoven Symphony No. 9, under the baton of Zubin Mehta . Ms. Hinds appeared at the Munich Biennale and the Aachen Opera in the leading role of The Mother of Three Sons, a new opera-ballet with music by Leroy Jenkins and choreography-direction by Bill T. Jones. She returned to Europe for two Verdi Requiem performances in Nice. She also debuted in Mexico City in the Mahler Symphony No. 8. Miss Hinds was featured on the PBS broadcast of Robert Greenleaf's Under the Arbor. Ruby Hinds has also appeared at Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center, New York and for the Spoleto Festival both in Charleston S.C. and in Spoleto, Italy with her two sisters, internationally known as the Hinds Sisters Trio.
