"For Children" ("Gyermekeknek" in Hungarian) is a cycle of short piano pieces which were composed by Béla Bartók between 1908 and 1909. The pieces are based on mainly Hungarian and Slovakian folk tunes and the final publication consisted of two volumes, Vol. 1 consisting of 40 pieces and Vol. 2 of 39. Although, as the title suggests, they were intended for young children, the musical value of the pieces and the their unique connections to real Hungarian folk music (as opposed to the gypsy pieces which inspired Brahms and Liszt) make the collection one of the most important contributions to 20th Century music.
