The Holladay Sisters were instrumental in the rockin’ soul sound of the late sixties and seventies. In 1967 Mary Holladay began recording as a back up singer in Muscle Shoals Alabama. She sang at the renowned R& B recording center and recorded at Quinvy, Fame, Broadway Sound, & Muscle Shoals Sound as well as American Sound in Memphis, Tn. and Atlantic Records Studio in New York. During this time she backed up Etta James, Dionne Warwick, Ella Washington, Merrilee Rush, Persey Sledege, B.J. Thomas, Joe Simon, Joe Tex, Clarence Carter, The Box Tops, Roosevelt Greer, Bobby Womack, James Purify & Ben E. King. In 1969 she sang on the hit records of Neil Diamonds “Brother Love'sTraveling Salvation Show”, “Cry Like a Baby” by the Box Tops and “Hooked on a Feeling” by BJ Thomas and an Album for Sonny & Cher recorded at Muscle Shoals Sound. Later in 1969 Mary’s sister, Ginger Holladay joined her, Jeannie Greene and Donna Thatcher to sing on the legendary comeback album for Elvis Presley, “From Elvis in Memphis”. These sessions included the hits “In the Ghetto”, “Suspicious Minds”, “Cold Kentucky Rain” and more. After the Memphis sessions Mary & Ginger sang in Muscle Shoals recording studios on albums for Percy Sledge, Joe Tex, Arthur Alexander, Joe Simon, & Odetta. They began touring with Ronnie Milsap and eventually moved to Nashville. Together they sang on more Elvis hits including “Hunk of Burnin Love” and “The Wonder of You”. The Holladay Sisters continued to sing on many Elvis recordings until his death in 1977. The Holladays are noted for their back up on number one hits with Willie Nelson’s “Always on My Mind”, Jimmy Buffet’s “Cheeseburger in Paradise”, Jerry Reed’s “When Your Hot You’re Hot”, Joan Baez’s “The Night they Drove Ole’ Dixie Down”, Billy Swan’s “I Can Help”, Ray Steven’s “The Streak”, Dave Loggin’s “Please Come to Boston”, and Charlie Rich’s “I Love My Friend”. Touring with Ray Stevens took them to sing at President Nixon’s inaugeration in 1972. Ginger & Mary also toured with Linda Ronstadt and sang on her classic album “Love has No Pride”. As two of the most popular recording studio vocalists in Nashville, The Holladay Sisters had the great pleasure of singing on albums for Roy Orbison, Carl Perkins, John Conlee, Donna Fargo, Brenda Lee, Emmy Lou Harris, Guy Clark, Waylon Jennings, Roger Miller, Ronnie Milsap, Dolly Parton, Reba McIntyre, Jerry Lee Lewis, George Jones, Conway Twitty, Delbert McClinton, John Prine, John Hiatt, Boz Scaggs, Donavan, Ferlin Husky, Hank Snow, Barbara Mandrell, Roy Hamilton, Dickie Lee, Jim Reeves, Mickey Newbury, Lorretta Lynn, Steve Young, Joe Ely, David Allen Coe, Crystal Gale, Janie Fricke, &, Marty Robbins, and French recording artist Eddie Mitchell. They also sang on many commercials including; United Airlines, McDonalds, Nestle’s Crunch, Kellogs, Coke, Mountain Dew, and 7 Up. Recently The Holladay Sisters have performed with The Memphis Boys, The Original Elvis Tribute Show in Europe and they are often special guest at Elvis Week in Memphis.
