After establishing himself as a solo performer in Sydney ten years ago, Athron released a full length alb¬um ‘Taming Butterflies’ to capture his acoustic sound, along with the strings, horns, percussion and female harmonies that came to symbolize his live performances. Australia’s first official carbon neutral album release, it was well received as Athron shared its melodic story telling along Australia’s east coast, touring with Australian band Pinky Beecroft and the White Russians. Not one to stand still for too long, Athron soon escaped to the island of Bali in Indonesia and despite a lifetime of changing backgrounds, his foreground focus remained the same; music, writing, gigging. Building on his use of loop pedals to create multiple vocal harmonies and layered guitars, Athron quickly won over audiences in Bali, performing with touring artists such as Michael Franti along with working his own weekly resident gigs. In the space between, he began writing his second album. Jamming it out with some of Bali’s own skilled musicians, Athron’s demos quickly moved from the bedroom to thumping bars and clubs before finding their place in the recording studio. A successful crowd-funding campaign pulled together support from both Indonesia and Australia and Athron’s second album ‘Escape into Fiction’ was soon became a collaboration between the two countries; recording, production and mixing taking place in both Sydney and Bali. As a result, ‘Escape into Fiction’ plays out a mixed bag of sounds that chime out acoustic soul from the bedroom right through to heavy rock grooves and dark pop melodies. It is a journey as varied as Athron’s own life experiences; a single narrative thick with variety and diversity. As Athron says “When your influences span across almost every genre, it’s hard to stick to a singular style when writing alone. What’s important though is how the songs are tied together and I’m lucky to be working with musicians that have helped forge the overall sound of ‘Escape into Fiction’ into a solid set. I’m an over-emotional thing, so there’s plenty of that in there, but it’s balanced out with plenty of upbeat grooves, it’s a positive bag of tunes for the emotionally inclined!”
