All music produced by E.Bassi (2009) & performed by E.Bassi, except "Music inspired by The Wind in the Willows", performed by E.Bassi & V.Popolus; and "Tetrahedral Planetoid", performed by E.Bassi & M.Scaravelli. ORIGINAL LINER NOTES: Among the musicians of the different genres there is the exigency, almost existential, to get the absolute control of the instrument, as to find a gratification for their mental and manual effort. “Hands” for me were a real obsession, at least until the day my music aim wasn’t the technical control of the piano any more. In my mind I had a series of images which nothing had to do with the music itself. I could have expressed visions and obsessions in words, instead I tried with the graphic art without great results; at the end I decided to transfer all them in “sounds”, definitely leaving the study of the music based on counterpoint, theory, solfeggio, ecc. I tried to conceive a new technique of composition and recording with huge effort, which could translated the mental images in sounds more or less organized. First of all, I had to focus my attention not to fall in the easy emulation: at that time I had a good knowledge of the classic contemporary music and I knew the methods practised by those compositors of genius. Since then I differ on purpose from Cage, Berio, Stockhausen, Maderna, etc. I started from a proper “music” idea: it comes out from concepts, images, events, moments, fables, philosophies and other matters which little have to do with casualness or planned unpredictability. The lack of this fundamental leading point drives me to identify myself with a contemporary compositor, and the consequence is that the listener could find my creations less enjoyable. I know this choice involves a classification by the music critics and in this classification contemporary music such as mine is kept far from the so-called “serious music”. Years ago I still happened to take one of my “five-line stave sketches”, re-arrange them in accordance with the sound image that I wanted to re-create in that particular moment, and to proceed with the sound recording using the classic technique of One Man Band (bounce, ping pong, mixdown, ecc.). Today I choose one of my own working techniques (operating almost in live) and thanks to my electronic apparatus (which can be previously programmed and configured) I can work at the same time on the conception, composition and recording. That’s how I can realize the mental representation of the thoughts I embrace and I do this without any help by the computers. First I decided to call my last creation “Beyond the evident logic”, in order to divert the listener from any mental image that I could suggest in him/her and to recommend a personal representation, which becomes essential to appreciate completely the purely conceptual compositions and performances. At the end the title has been changed in “The Wind in the Willows and other stories”. I hope that all the listeners can rejoice at my music, at its sense of hunour, at its spatiality and the sense of quiet and tranquillity that it wants to pass on, without too much pretence but with sound, genuine and respectable intentions.
