Finding your own voice as an artist is always a challenge. It may be even more difficult for those with a strong musical lineage. KSM recordings artist kelda comes from a creative family that includes legendary jazz great Ornette Coleman. Somewhere between her mother's Broadway career and her uncle's experimental jazz success, kelda had to blaze her own path. Her KSM debut, Detour (2/05), is that path revealed. Both personal and engaging, Detour provides a glimpse into kelda's multi-faceted world. From dark love songs such as "Pavement" to pent-up frustrations in "Let It Go", Detour lights the path the artist has walked. The track "Special" is a very special one indeed ... and will be the first single released. The 13 song album showcases kelda's matured song craft and melodic artistry by balancing stripped-down, acoustic-based songs on part of the record (with kelda on vocals and piano/guitar and Andrew Glazier on cello) with powerful, full-band production on the rest of the record (joining kelda and Andrew is Geoffrey Jost on bass, Jeff Gray on electric and acoustic guitars and Tim Hunter and Ziv Fisher on drums/percussion). Guest appearances include Daniel Shulman (Garbage), Andreas Straub (Run DMC, Warren G), Chris Opperman (Steve Vai) and Richard Barron on Hammond B3 Organ and mellotron. kelda's unique and hypnotic songs can liven the hungriest of audiences and sooth the loneliest of hearts. The music can best be described as a sensual union of rhythmic funk and melodious piano-based alternative pop with immediate lyrics and a youthful sincerity that's earnest, open and real. "The path of life, and this album, has been a musical Detour that has been filled with twists and turns that often lead us to the place we least expect ... but then we find it is the best place to be", said kelda. "I feel that I have been on a road of growth, in songwriting, vocal power, and musicianship, and that is exemplified on this new CD." kelda also got a pre-album release makeover on USA Network's "Before and Afternoon", which aired on November 20, 2004. Hosts Marianne Curan (The Tonight Show with Jay Leno) and Jordan Murphy (For Love and Money) helped create an exciting new image for kelda show. The February release of the album will be followed by (de)Tour in 2005. kelda has headlined venues all over the United States and Europe. Her music receives airplay on commercial, college and online radio internationally and has been licensed for film and television as well. In 2003 and 2004, kelda was selected as one of the Hot 100 Unsigned Artists by Music Connection Magazine and in 2004, she was one of twelve ASCAP members to be selected for participation in the prestigious Lester Sill's Songwriting Workshop.
