Blackened Hallows was in the works from the first full band practice we ever had. We practiced the songs we had, then Garrett wrote the first riff for Blackened Hallows, the opening, evil tri-tones. We immediately jumped on the idea of this evil sounding record where we took some of our favorite influences and incorporated it into one album. The album starts with the title track, Blackened Hallows, a very black metal influenced song about how we will all inevitably die, here on this rock with no hope for progress. This track also sets the tone for the rest of the album, uncompromising in the face of death, we will continue to kill each other and our selves. Which is what the second track is about, “Salvation Through Destruction.” Inspired by the game Mass Effect 3, this track encompasses how we as a species are reaching our inevitable demise by our own hands. The song is the fastest and is inspired by the melodic death metal pioneers “The Black Dahlia Murder,” (BDM was the actual working title for this song for the longest time, and is still used here and there.) The third song, “Vertigo,” is a little more personal, Written from a personal experience of Garrett with help from Sam, this song is about a struggle that he took on about feeling insane, that society was SUPPOSED to control him and that he was weird for not letting it happen. But he discovered that the insanity he was feeling was his one, true reality. The song is inspired by a nu-metal vibe, bands such as Slipknot and Sworn In. The final song, AI, is based around the premise that our world today is over run with technology, that people are spending more time with their personal devices than with each other. It is also pointing attention that people are making their life reside on the internet, spending almost all their time they can online to impress people with a fake life they want. This song was written with multiple genres in mind, with a nice slam section at the end.
