From NO DEPRESSION Americana album review: I was asked to review this EP. I don’t do reviews on request. I am not a writer by trade, you will notice. Also, previous requests were not going to get a good review. I will tell a band what I think, but I’m not going to publicly trash ‘em. Not my place to crush dreams. Simply want to turn people on to what I consider good music. It’s just my opinion, but I'm telling everyone about this EP. I’d never heard of NYC to Colorado transplant Ned Warner. Wouldn't someone travel the other way around when looking for a big break? That says he's different. There were no prior expectations, high or low. Burned a copy to play in the car. I drove to my favorite watering hole and sat in a parking lot for 6 minutes to finish listening. He writes a good hook and the songs capture that Colorado Rocky Mountain influence. He's left NYC behind. When I arrived home I sat in the car for another 6 min to finish listening, again. I've listened many times since. “Trouble” opens with a Harmonica pleading over a nice Acoustic Rhythm Guitar and Organ. He's battling Demons and the lyrics are a plaintive cry for relief, if not redemption. “My heart is burnin’ like a sun My pain is gunnin’ for someone” I like that line. I recognize that line. His voice has an edge to it. Not Tom waits rough, but worldly. Bit of Dylan-ish twang. Friendly. “Low In The Sky” brings a quickened tempo that's almost Gospel. Banjo and Organ join in for a raucous little tune. Bit of Electric Guitar and a catchy chorus. I caught myself clapping along with it. “Little Bird” weaves a pretty Banjo line throughout and the song takes flight. I choose to believe the lyric is about taking chances. Expressing yourself. “Please Little Bird , what’s your name , what’s your name Sing a little song, sing it loud, sing it strong” Another beautiful Banjo intro for “Majer (sic) Blues”, and a Harmonica when it counts. We‘re all searching for something in this life. “Your Last Reckoning” closes the EP. Electric guitar this time. Not flashy, but right where it needs to be. Liz Berube's Harmony vocals are beautiful, as Ned sings of finding his answers. Talented Ned sings, plays all Guitars, Organ and Percussion. Casey Boyd-Banjo, Jason Taylor-Harmonica and Erin Youngerberg-Bass add to the songs. They don't overpower them. All turn in a laudable performance. If you like a story well told, and melodies well played, Reckoning is worth a listen. It may be "homegrown" without that final "big studio polish" but that's part of it's charm. It's well produced and well mixed. A case of the “whole being greater than the sum of it’s parts”. Very satisfying. My only complaint is there are only 5 songs. I'd like to hear more. Reckoning - "the time when your actions are judged as good or bad and you are rewarded or punished." Merriam-Webster Ned Warner should be rewarded for this effort. All you can ask from an artist is to let them take you on an honest journey. Mr. Warner has done just that. He’s on the verge of finding a larger audience. Count me as a fan. 8 out of 10 for those who like numbers You may preview and purchase Reckoning from bandcamp at: http://nedwarner.bandcamp.com/album/reckoning To find more information on Ned Warner's music: www.nedwarnermusic.com
