简介

...and admit that the waters around you have grown... It was that line that made me think maybe it was worth covering this Dylan classic. As someone who is now standing, still relatively upright, on the other side of the Generation Gap, I have nothing but enthusiastic optimism for what I see on the other shore. I grew up relatively oblivious of the world beyond my house, my town. It's not even close now. Even with all the challenges we've been heaping, and the ones we have yet to heap, I sense an openness, acceptance, and intensity that is bound to meet that heap and sweep it aside. Or at least not add to it. The Times have always been changing, Daddio. Every generation feels the burn of potential transformation. Every generation makes their own go at it. Never slipping behind. Setbacks be damned. This one seems pretty adept at focusing their tools to test their own ideas and debunking bunk they're fed. I'm excited imagining my son's generation at my age (already they would rather have dinner with a 74yr old senator than Taylor Swift or Beyonce). Perhaps there will be no gap to speak of. But I'm sure Dylan's words will still resonate. This arrangement in G-minor was hatched a while ago with our former band, 4Eyes (same Charismatic guys plus the Mark van Bork). For me, I think our best rendition was at The Squealing Pig in Provincetown one winterish night where the groove was decidedly sinister. I think it never left me and I've been wanting to capture that energy again, so here is an attempt, but decidedly different. I have to say, before these guys (especially Jimmy), my experience with Dylan was a cassette my wife had of some album. "Some album"–that's how much I paid him mind. Stuff gets fixed. We made some extra time while we were recording UnReQuieted at Brick Hill to get it down with Jon. Mattias Bossi of Rabbit Rabbit Radio, Ridiculon etc. sent us running on the drums and congas. We grabbed the fiery Bruce Abbot who had played on a few tunes already on UnReQuieted and who pulled out an infernal noise on the alto. And for that last verse about the moms and dads, we brought in the big guns. My son, Horatio (not the first time we'd performed Dylan together, actually ), had sung a demo of the last verse and we sent out word that we were looking for some strong voices to close this out. In came The Changelings: Abby, Michelle, Elena, Peter, Caleb and Horatio. Thanks to all who helped get this done. Please sign up because we will start releasing our album, UnReQuieted, one song at a time and you will want to get the emails. They'll have more info about each song and the process. --- H Come gather ’round people Wherever you roam And admit that the waters Around you have grown And accept it that soon You’ll be drenched to the bone If your time to you is worth savin’ Then you better start swimmin’ or you’ll sink like a stone For the times they are a-changin’ Come writers and critics Who prophesize with your pen And keep your eyes wide The chance won’t come again And don’t speak too soon For the wheel’s still in spin And there’s no tellin’ who that it’s namin’ For the loser now will be later to win For the times they are a-changin’ Come senators, congressmen Please heed the call Don’t stand in the doorway Don’t block up the hall For he that gets hurt Will be he who has stalled There’s a battle outside and it is ragin’ It’ll soon shake your windows and rattle your walls For the times they are a-changin’ Come mothers and fathers Throughout the land And don’t criticize What you can’t understand Your sons and your daughters Are beyond your command Your old road is rapidly agin’ Please get out of the new one if you can’t lend your hand For the times they are a-changin’ The line it is drawn The curse it is cast The slow one now Will later be fast As the present now Will later be past The order is rapidly fadin’ And the first one now will later be last For the times they are a-changin’ Copyright © 1963, 1964 by Warner Bros.
